Culture Day

Last week, our 5th and 6th Class pupils hosted an amazing Cultural Day in the school. Each group worked very hard to create a project about their country of heritage or a country of their choice. The children proudly shared traditional clothing, artefacts, arts and crafts, music and delicious food from around the world. The hall was filled with wonderful colours, sounds, smells and smiles, creating a fantastic atmosphere for everyone to enjoy.

A huge thank you to all the parents and families who helped make the day so special by sharing their culture with us and especially for providing such delicious traditional foods. Your support and generosity were greatly appreciated. It was a wonderful celebration of the diversity in our school community, and we hope this will become an annual event in the years to come!

Sligo Woodland School Trip

As part of our Heritage Keepers project this year we had the amazing opportunity to visit Sligo Woodland School for a day where we got to learn all about tress, nature and how and why it is important for us to protect it for future generations. We learned how to plant trees, chop wood, make sustainable toys and crafts from wood. We also got the opportunity to build our own shelters from wood, make skewers for roasting marshmallows and had lots of fun relaxing in hammocks and playing on the wooden swings.  Thank you so much to Trisha and team for facilitating such an amazing day.

Music Generation Performance

3rd Class were delighted to be able to learn how to play an instrument this year. With teacher Karl, the children mastered how to perform many pieces of music on the ukulele. On June 4th in the ATU arena, the children performed on stage for their parents, children of other schools and their parents and families. This is an achievement the children should be very proud of. Well done boys and girls!!

September in Senior Infants

Senior Infants have been very busy across the month of September. We welcomed three new children from Ukraine to our class – we hope they are settling in well. Meet the new Senior Infants:

We have been focusing on the theme of myself & birthdays for the month of September in SESE and Aistear. The children have enjoyed all areas in our Aistear Rota. At the creative station, using playdoh and loose parts the children created birthday items, in the small world area the children played with the family home and members of a family. At the writing station the children were given the opportunity to write birthday cards and party invitations, party shopping lists and design birthday cakes, just in time for the birthday parties to play out in the role play area. Have a look at some photos of all our activities in action below.

New Year in Senior Infants

Happy New Year from all in Senior Infants!!

We have had a lovely fresh start to the new year in Senior Infants – not only a new beginning in 2022, but we have had a fresh healthy start, learning all about how to keep our bodies healthy to ensure we grow big and strong! We have been categorising  food into healthy and unhealthy food, with a focus on fruits and vegetables that are important in our diet to provide us with lots of vitamins and minerals to keep us healthy in the Winter season. We tasted some fruit and vegetables in school – some we had never tasted before! And we made some healthy smoothies….. YUM!!

In keeping with our Food theme, a supermarket opened in Room 7. The Supermarket is very popular and  is well stocked with fresh food and vegetables – that are a great price to purchase! We used fresh vegetables for printing in art, enjoyed playing an oral language shopping game, created some fruit using playdoh and even took part in washing and drying the dishes,  which the children loved to do!!

We have had a busy, fun start to 2022 in Room 7!

The Boy In The Dress

Last month we read the book The Boy In The Dress by David Walliams. Our class was very lucky to take part in a live webinar with David Walliams himself where he told the children how he feels the boy in the dress (Dennis) is the character most like him and that he thinks it is very important that people understand that it is not only ok to feel different but it is a good thing. We also designed some of our own dresses out of a range of materials for our art lessons. I think you’ll agree we have some budding fashion designers in 4th class this year.

Message from Aisling HSCL – ‘History books will talk of now’.

Hello to you all,

Call me, Aisling HSCL 086 7769756 any day for a chat or if you have a concern. It is great to chat to you all and  I will help you in any way that I can.

Below, is a poem, written by  a Mom in the U.K – this poem has become a social media sensation! Enjoy reading it- I hope it gives you all hope and encouragement. As a Mommy, it really helped to remind me that we are all doing our best for something very important. We can do this together!

‘The Rainbow Children’

The history books will talk of now,
That time the world stood still.
When every family stayed at home,
Waved out from windowsills-
At those they loved but could not hold,
Because they loved them so.
Yet, whilst they did they noticed all the flowers start to grow.

The sun came out, they can recall,
And windows, rainbows filled.
They kicked a football in their yards,
Until the night drew in.
They walked each day but not too close,
That time the world stood still.
When people walked straight down the roads,
That once the cars did fill.

They saw that people became ill,
They knew the world was scared.
But whilst the world stood still they saw,
How much the whole world cared.
They clapped on Thursdays from their doors,
They cheered for the brave.
For people who would risk their lives,
So others could be saved.

The schools closed down, they missed their friends,
They missed their teachers so.
Their Mam’s and Dad’s helped with their work,
They helped their minds to grow.
The parents used to worry that,
As schools were put on hold,
Their children wouldn’t have the tools,
They’d need as they grew old.

But history books will talk of them,
Now adults, fully grown.
Those little boys and girls back then,
The ones who stayed at home.
They’ll tell you that they fixed this world,
Of all they would fulfill.
The RAINBOW children building dreams,
They’d dreamed whilst time stood still

Stay safe, stay calm and share your laughter.

Hygiene Precautions in Our School

Dear Parents

Given that COVID19 is a new infection, it is understandable that there is a lot of anxiety and fear. The Department of Education and Skills and the Chief Medical Officer have been in regular contact. They have issued all schools with the most up to date and accurate information and advice. After the most recent risk assessment, they have said that schools should remain open. They will be in contact with regard to our school and staff should this assessment change.

Any action taken will be based on specific public health advice. No other action can be taken by schools without this. In the meantime, please rest assured that we are continuing to strive to ensure that risk of infection is minimised:
Washing hands correctly and regularly,
Common steps to prevent sharing of infections when coughing and sneezing
Reminding children to drink water throughout the day
Cleaning of surfaces is ongoing
Visitors to the school will be asked to use hand sanitisers available
No whole school events for the moment.

We need to balance this with a positive attitude and outlook and to keep children calm and engaged. For this we will need your support. You can:

Model regular good handwashing
Model safe sneezing and coughing practices
Give your child their own labelled drink bottle of water each day
Minimise adult conversations about the virus around children that may frighten them
We ask you to follow hse.ie and Gov.ie/health for accurate information about COVID19, symptoms and steps to protect yourselves.

Thank you for your continued support
