Science Discovery in 4th Class

We were lucky in 4th class to welcome Abbvie into our class this week for some science discovery.

First we talked about ‘who is a scientist?’. Then some children had a chance to dress up as scientists. We spoke about why a scientist needs a coat and glasses – to protect themselves.

After that each group was given a mystery box. We weren’t allowed to touch it at first, we had to take a guess of what is was, what was inside of it and the materials it was made from.

Then we compared another box, of the same size, but with various materials inside it to try and identify what was in the mystery box. We compared the weight, sound and whether or not the contents inside could be magnetised. From that, we identified what was in our mystery box.

 

Making 3D Shapes

Today in Senior Infant’s we made 3D shapes using mini-marshmallows and toothpicks. The children started off by making 2D shapes e.g squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, pentagons and hexagons. They then went on to make 3D shapes  such as cubes, square based pyramids, triangular based pyramids and cuboids. 

 

Sally has made a square and Brook has made a cube. Kayla has made a pentagon.Israel is making a pyramid.Here is Blake making a cube.

Final Maths Week Question:

Well done to all the boys and girls who attempted our second maths problem of Maths week. The following children earn themselves 3 stamps/dojo points for getting the questions correct & being the first to Room 4 with their answers:

Hello everyone!

As it is Maths Week in Ireland this week all classes will be doing different tasks and activities to celebrate it. Each day there will be a maths question on our school blog for you to solve. The first child to Room 4 with the correct answer for the problem will win themselves some stamps.

Junior Problem:

Noah saw 12 legs walk by into the ark. How many creatures could he have seen?
How many different answers can you find?

Senior Problem:

Jennie the old sheep dog is lazing around in the paddock near the house. She counts the number of animals in the paddock. There are 11 of them, pigs and ducks. Then she counts the legs. She sees 28 legs.

How many ducks are there?

Maths Fun at Lunch Time

Some of our 5th class girls had fun making triangular pyramids at lunch time today out of play mats. And they made lovely cosy tents. 

Hour of Code in 2nd Class

Second Class enjoyed doing the Hour of Code this year. Our coding was based on the Disney film ‘Moana’. Moana and Maui were attacked by the Kakamora. They had to approach the Kakamora barge, get on board and cut all the ropes to sink the barge.
We had to tell Maui how to get to the barge and cut the ropes while avoiding being attacked himself. We did this by dragging and dropping the orders telling Maui what to do, where to move, when to dodge, strike and cut the ropes.
The last lesson was brilliant. We had to invent a dance for the Kakamora. When you press run you can watch the dance. We made the dances really funny.

Puzzle for Maths Week

Here is another puzzle for you to try. Don’t forget … all children who return correct answers  to Room 11 before Friday will receive stamps

Our new Green Flag, Reading Certs and SALF Folders in 3rd.

In May our school won our 6th Green Flag – ‘Global Citizenship Litter and Waste’. A girl from 6th and a boy from 3rd who are on the Green School Committee got chosen to go to Claremorris to collect the flag. They had a great day out.

At the end of June our class had a presentation of reading certs which we won by doing library quizzes. We have enjoyed reading books in the library this year.

We worked on SALF folders during the year in 3rd class. SALF means – Self Assessment Learning Folder. During the year we put some of our best work into the folders to show to everyone. We had fun working in groups and looking at all the folders. We have pictures here of our class showing some lovely work which we are very proud of.

Making Magnetic Cars with Matchboxes and Magnets

Design and Make: Make a car with a matchbox and a magnet
Our Procedure to make a magnet car and move it with a larger magnet
Materials:
Matchbox, 2 cocktail sticks, a straw, sellotape, a magnet small enough to fit in the box and a bigger one to push or pull the car, cardboard, coins for making circles, ruler for measuring and blue tack for covering the sharp points of the cocktail sticks.
Method
1. First we estimated the width of the matchbox.
2. Then we got the ruler and measured the width. It was 3 ½ cm.
3. We measured 3 ½ cm on the straw and cut it.
4. We checked and it fitted exactly on the matchbox.
5. We used sellotape to attach the straw to the matchbox and then did this a second time.
6. We put 1 cocktail stick through each straw to make an axle that can go around.
7. We had to think about why we needed to put the cocktail stick inside a straw.
8. We know it is so that the cocktail stick will go around like an axle.
9. Next we drew around the €1 coin and cut it out.
10. Then we drew a line through the middle. We found out that this was called the diameter.
11. We drew another line through the middle and where they met was the centre point.
12. The teacher made a hole with a needle at that point for the cocktail stick. We did this 3 more times to make the rest of the wheels.
13. We attached the wheels to the cocktail sticks and covered the sharp points with blue-tack.
14. Last of all we put a small magnet in the car.
15. Now the car is ready and we can decorate it or add a cover to it.
16. We used a big magnet to make the car move. We can use the opposite poles to pull the car or we can push the car if we put like poles together.
We had great fun testing our cars and trying to race them!
