Maths Week Fun!

Third class have been enjoying lots of different activities for Maths Week 2025.

We took part in an online quiz to celebrate Maths Week with 300 pupils all around Ireland.  We used IZAK 9 cubes and worked together in teams for some problem solving tasks and we went on a trip to Sligo Library where we created Mandala Designs with Sarah focusing on shape, pattern and line.  What fun we have with Maths!

3D Shapes in Senior Infants

Senior infants have been working very hard at learning all about 3D shapes. We learned about the properties of the shapes – that means how the shapes are made up.  We learned about a cube, cuboid, sphere and cylinder.

A cube is like a box – because it is 3D, you can pick it up. It has 6 faces which are square in shape, 12 sides and 12 corners. We built cubes using marshmallows and matchsticks. Have a look at our cubes below:

Friday Treats in 2nd Class

We had an exciting day today in 2nd class – we baked cookies!

 

We weighed out the ingredients, mixed them all up and baked them in the oven. Everyone had a chance to join in and roll out their own cookie.

 

We enjoyed our cookies during Golden Time.

Christmas in Junior Infants

There were lots of Christmas activities going on in Junior Infants this month. Have a look at our slideshow of photos and videos and you will see all the activities we did in Aistear. We had our Santa’s Grotto, where we dressed up as Santa or the elves or reindeers and designed toys, made them and we really enjoyed wrapping them up and putting them into Santa’s sack or under the Christmas Tree. 

We made lots of Christmas art, Christmas wreaths, stockings, trees, cards, jumpers, lights, candy canes, snowflakes, snowmen. We found lots of Christmas words in our snow area outside. We had a visit from Santa who brought us lovely treats. 

In PE, we played Reindeer tag and lots of games using the parachute. We played lots of fun Christmas games on the iPads and on the board. We had our Christmas performance where we sang songs and dressed up in our Christmas jumpers. 

We put the baby Jesus into our school crib and said our prayers. Fr Noel came into our classroom and gave us lovely Christmas cards. We had a visit from Milo the rescue dog. 

We made snowmen out of marshmallows and decorated them using coloured icing. Ms Cormican came into our classroom and showed us real Reindeer antlers which got caught in a tree beside her house one Christmas eve. We made sets, patterns and learned all about the number 2 and 3 in maths.

Finally we got to go on a trip to the Hawkswell to see a Christmas performance, which we really enjoyed.

Science week In Junior Infants

In Junior Infants we had great fun during Science week. Here are a few of the experiments we tried out:

Experiment 1: Floating and Sinking

  1. First we predicted which objects would float or sink when placed in water. 
  2. Then we tested them out in water to see if our prediction was correct. 

Results: Some objects had air inside them and we learned that the air inside was lighter than the water and that’s why they floated. 

Experiment 2: Skittle colour mixing

  1. We placed the skittles around the edge of a plate in a circle shape.
  2. We poured warm water into the middle of the plate until it reached the sweets.
  3. We watched the colours mix.

Result: The outside of the skittles are made of sugar. When sugar is put into warm water it dissolves. As the colours meet, they mix creating different colours.

Experiment 3: Paper Towel colour mixing

  1. First we put yellow, blue and red food colouring into four separate cups.
  2. Then we added water to each cup.
  3. We used sheets of kitchen towel, folded them and placed one end in one cup and the other end into the other cup.
  4. We then watched what happened.

Result: The water moved up the paper towel because the paper is absorbent. The colour travels with the water, making the kitchen towel change colour from white to red, blue, or yellow. The colours mix when they meet together. Red and blue make purple and blue and yellow make green.

Beebots: 

We had great fun learning how to use the Beebots. We had to key in instructions to make the Beebot move forward, backwards, right, left or turn around. 

  1. We made a maze and directed the Beebots from one side to the other.
  2. We used the shape board to direct the Beebots to different shape colours and sizes.
  3. We used the number ladder to move the Beebots to the different numbers.
