May in Senior Infants

Senior Infants have been very busy for the month of May. A lot of work has been completed and here we are sharing with you what we have been up to.

Our theme for this month was summer, and all things summer related. The children have played in role as travel agents arranging holidays and stay-cations for customers, and as customers looking to book their summer trip away.  They created passports, packed suitcases and wrote checklists of items needed for a holiday to some place warm or some place cold.  We discussed various types of trips you could go on: to the beach, ski-ing, camping and to  water parks. We sure were dreaming of wonderful holidays in Senior Infants!

In small world the children played with the airport, checking in, walking to the plane and taking off as the pilot welcomed them on board. In maths we talked about weight – weighing items to see which was the lightest/heaviest, lighter and heavier. Airplanes were constructed using lego and we went to the seaside making sandcastles and finding shells in the sand area. We thought of summer flowers as we painted sunflowers being inspired by Van Gogh and created our own junk art summer flowers.

We linked water to the theme of summer also, learning about capacity and the volume of water certain containers could hold. We estimated, measured and compared various cups and beakers to see which could hold more/ less water. We also guessed and tested whether certain objects float or sink in water.  Finally we experimented materials to check if they were waterproof, and designed some boots using chosen materials that would keep our feet dry in puddles.

Not only that, we began a new Drama programme with Kate Brown who comes to visit us every week and listen to our stories. We have recorded our stories using words, pictures, voice and video. We are excited to see what first class perform using our stories in the next few weeks!!

Spring in Senior Infants

The children of Senior Infants have been very busy in school this Spring.  Our classroom turned into a Doctor’s Surgery, a spring farm and a building site designing and constructing houses with various materials for the three pigs.

The children took part in Lego We Do – building lego machines as part of Engineers Week and completed various pieces of art throughout the weeks.

Music Generation in the Ark

Last week the Ark finished Music Generation with Julia and we had so much fun! The boys and girls enjoyed the sounds and feel of the Violin, Cello and the Flute. They also played the drums and lots of percussion instruments. Every lesson had a different instrument and we also played lots of musical games. Music Generation is so much fun and we cant wait to see Julia again. Thank you so much Julia!

 

Space in Junior Infants

In November Junior Infants enjoyed learning all about Space. We acted out being astronauts going into Space in The Space Station Role Play area. We made Space objects such as planets, astronauts, stars, moon, sun using playdough. We made a puzzle of all the planets in our solar system. We made rockets using a pattern and wrote our names on our rockets. We made our own drawings of rockets and spaceships and coloured them in. We traced around space objects and used scissors to cut around planets. We had our own small world area with astronauts and rockets and acted out going into space using them. We cut around parts of an astronaut and put the parts together to make our own astronaut. We put stars, planets and rockets in order from the smallest to the largest. We looked at many different space books and enjoyed learning about this topic. Have a look at the slideshow below to see us in action.

October in Junior Infants

In October, the children in Junior Infants have enjoyed acting out the story We are Going on a Bear Hunt.  We learned about Autumn, we collected leaves and made hedgehogs using the leaves, we sorted the leaves, conkers and pine cones in the sand area. We made autumn animals using playdough and autumn trees using cotton buds and paint.

We also made a bear’s cave using lego blocks, we went on a bear hunt in our role play area and acted out the story. We made bear masks using paint and shapes.

For Halloween we enjoyed making potions in the water area, making witches hats and painting pumpkins. 

This week we have enjoyed maths week, playing games like snakes and ladders, counting cubes and going on a trail around the school. We have enjoyed learning about patterns, sorting objects into sets, putting ourselves in order from the tallest to the shortest. 

We have also enjoyed choosing our favourite library book and talking about it in front of the class. Have a look at our video showing some of the activities we completed in October. 

Summer Camp June 28th – July 2nd 2021

What a week we had at Summer Camp this year with lots of fun, discovery, sports and baking! Ms .Kivlehan, Ms. Quigley, Ms. Devaney & Ms. Browne probably had even more fun than the kids with all of the exciting activities that took place as well as a number of surprises thrown in throughout the week.

The weather really was on our side, with sunshine every day and plenty opportunities to be outside having fun with our friends and getting to know each other even better. It was a great week of exploring, learning through fun and play as well as challenging ourselves to learn new games, We went on Scavenger Hunts, did Maths Trails, searched for different types of outdoor life in the school grounds as well as enjoying walks to The Famine Graveyard where we took part in learning all about ‘history in our locality’.

Each Group had so much fun and exercise outside on the yard as well as on the pitch and the Maze. We played tag rugby, soccer, basketball and hockey. The children enjoyed the obstacle courses and some parachute fun with their friends. Other groups were challenged in orienteering tasks  and some even got to make tie-dye t-shirts. Groups were discovering science with experiments as well as  making yummy treats in the kitchen (There was probably very little left to take home to share with you all!!!)

Beautiful art was seen throughout the camp with each group using different materials and various methods to create masterpieces.  We painted with pastels and baby oil and and made ice cream cones

Ms. Grimes arrived into our classrooms on Friday with pizza for us all – what a treat for the boys and girls who were so fantastic all week long. A big ‘Thank You’ to Ms. Grimes and to Ms. Quigley for organising  this pizza party.

We had a visit from Lou from Sligo County Library on Thursday – she presented each group with their Summer Stars reading bags and told us all about the Summer Stars Programme in the Library and the great prizes that can be won. Keep an eye on our school Facebook page for more details. Lou read some lovely stories to us and we really enjoyed listening to these tales with our friends.

Space Adventures in Junior Infants

For the month of April, the children in Junior Infants have been learning all about Space and The Solar System. There has been aspects of Space throughout many subjects in our classroom and the children thoroughly enjoyed experiencing space for themselves in our role play area during Aistear time.

Here are some facts that we learned about Space and The Solar System:

  1. There are eight planets in the solar system: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupitar, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
  2. Venus is the hottest planet.
  3. Earth is the third planet from the sun.
  4. It takes Mercury 88 days(fastest)  and  Neptune(slowest) 164 years to travel around the sun.
  5. Mars is known as the red planet because a material like rust in its soil gives it a red colour.
  6. You can see five planets from Earth using only your eyes: Mercury,  Venus, Mars, Jupitar and Saturn.
  7. Earth’s nickname is ‘The Goldilock’s Planet’,  it’s temperature is not too hot and not too cold, it’s just right!
  8. Jupitar is the largest planet in the solar system. It is a gas planet. You cannot land on Jupitar as it is made of gas.
  9. Saturn is known for its rings. They are made from ice particles and dust.
  10. Uranus & Neptune are covered in clouds of methane which give them their blue colour. Neptune is a darker blue than Uranus.

Summer Camp August 2020

Hearing the sound of children’s voices throughout the school this week really gave us a lift. We welcomed back a group of 36 children to our summer camp on Monday morning. They have been amazing us every day with their hand washing and sanitising skills. The children have been demonstrating their knowledge of how to keep themselves and others safe while working separately in their small groups.It is obvious Parents & Families have been working hard at home for the past few months to ensure the children are familiar with the ways we can try our best to keep each other safe. Summer Camp  looked a different to camps from other years but the levels of fun and happiness were just as high!

In the Junior Group we had such a brilliant week led by Ms.Marren. We were super at looking out for one another and washing our hands!Teacher wore her face mask whenever she could not social distance and we got very used to this after the first morning! We all did our very best to keep everybody safe.

Some of our favourite activities included;

Making our own lunches in the kitchen: This was such a great learning experience. Making choices about what we would like to eat, choosing our food, buttering our chosen bread and putting on our fillings. We even made our own rice krispie treats! We felt very independent .

Art and Crafts: This was another of our favourite activities. We did lots of different types of art, as you will see in our video. Painting, colour mixing, drawing, decorating, colouring and working with fabric and fibre. We were all so creative in our own ways.

Outdoor activities: We also loved getting outside and being active. We loved the running and throwing games. We worked on skills like balance, speed and coordination.

What a brilliant week – well done to the boys and girls.

Middle Group + Ms. Browne: Our week in Summer Camp was all about FUN,FUN & FUN! It was so lovely to be back in school and to see our friends and some of our Teachers too.

We had a busy week with plenty of Arts & Crafts activities, stories, outdoor games as well as Music, Dancing and even decorating our own cupcakes! We went on a Nature Walk and found some conkers by the pitch as well as listening outdoors for the many sounds around us.

Wayne O’Connor, the Storyteller came to visit on our last day of Camp and he was fantastic. He told us the story of mythical people a long time ago and he was really funny. We were so excited listening to him and watching him.

On Friday we had an ice-cream party and we really loved it. We even had yummy toppings to create our own ice creams- yummy, yummy in my tummy!

We sanitised our hands everytime we went into school and when we were leaving the school. We washed our hands throughout the day – before we ate and after we ate, whenever we sneezed or coughed and we all coughed into our elbows. Ms Browne could not believe how wonderful we were at following the guidelines about sneezing and coughing and she had her ‘proud Momm’ face’ on every day at Camp because we were so good at looking after one another!

We had a great time at Camp this week and we spent a lot of time outdoors – playing basketball, running through obstacle courses as well as doing our exercises with music.  We really enjoyed making our own lunches with help from Ms. Grimes as well as baking our Fairy Cakes in the kitchen. Decorating them was a messy job but so much fun!!!The fairy cakes were delicious.

We did lovely art and craft activities – making our own window decorations for home as well as doing music and board games in our room.

We followed social distancing guidelines and are really ready for and excited about getting back to school next Thursday – we know when to sanitise our hands and washed our hands regularly throughout the day at summer camp.

Summer Camp 2020 was the best fun!!!!!

Christmas in Junior Infants

Christmas was a very exciting time in Junior Infants. We had a lot of fun activities in our classroom and we also went on a few exciting outings. We went to the Hawkswell at the beginning of December along with children from Senior Infants, 1st and 2nd class and the Ark. We watched a Christmas pantomime called Santa’s Fairytale Christmas and it was very enjoyable. It was a great way to get into the Christmas spirit!

In our classroom, we dressed up as Santa Clause, the Elves and the Reindeers and got into role in our Santa’s Grotto Role Play area. We made a list of presents we wanted, the Elves made the toys in their workshop and wrapped the presents. Santa and the Reindeers delivered the toys. We found Christmas words in our snow area outside. We made letters to Santa by cutting out pictures from catalogues and sticking them down on letters. We decorated Christmas trees, Christmas stockings and painted Santa hats. We made Santa beards and shark fins for our Christmas concert.

We made Christmas cards for our own families, we put a real stamp and address on the envelope and then we walked down to the post office in town and posted them. We thank Ms Marron for joining us in our walk to the Post Office. We met a postman in his post van delivering parcels. On our way back we stopped off at the playground and played on the swings and slides. This was a great day!

We enjoyed making Christmas Rice Krispie Trees in the Kitchen. We each got a turn to mix the ingredients into the bowl and put sprinkles on the mixture when it was placed in a baking tray. We enjoyed eating our Christmas Tree. It was yummy!

In our last week, Destiny put the baby Jesus into our crib in school. We thank Johnny for making this lovely crib for us. We also said prayers at our own crib in our classroom and in the crib in the church. We had a visit from Santa. We got lovely treats from him and enjoyed singing Christmas songs. We had a visit from Milo, a therapy dog. We enjoyed giving Milo a rub, he was very soft and fluffy. We thank Mr. Murphy for letting us meet Milo. We had a party in our classroom and we got to eat nice treats and dance to our favourite tunes.

Post Office

In November, our Aistear theme in Junior Infants was The Post Office. We completed many different activities linked to this theme.

We acted out being a postal worker, customer, cashier, post person in our Post Office Role Play area. We pretended to put cards and letters into envelopes, then we put a stamp on the envelope and an address on the outside of the envelope and posted it in our post box in our role play area. We made post boxes in our art area using cardboard boxes. We painted them green and used sponge letters to make the word post on the box. We designed our own stamps, coloured them in and we put different prices on them.

We used play dough to make letters, post boxes, postal workers and post vans. We used small figures in our small world area to deliver letters to different houses. We found letters in the sand and sorted them out into different letter names.
