Nativity by 3rd Class

Well done to all the boys and girls who worked very hard in preparing and putting on a fantastic performance of the Nativity this week. Enjoy your well earned break over the holidays.

Oral Language Presentations

The children in room 4 have been very busy over the last few weeks. We have been working on our oral language skills and made our second presentations of the year this week. This time we had to speak at the top of our class infront of everybody. We had to speak for 45seconds about something based on the theme of winter. Some presentations included children speaking about Why they love Christmas, Winter time animals, Trying to catch Santa & Christmas in the country I come from. We had to remember to use good presentation skills – having good eye contact with our audience, standing still and speaking loud and clear. We also enjoyed giving each other two stars & a wish after the presentations were made. After Christmas we will be working towards speaking for one minute or more!!

Christmas Wishes from St Edward’s NS

We had our Christmas assembly today in the hall. The children who have had excellent attendance got selection boxes. Thulini won a prize for designing a beautiful school Christmas Card. The children who are learning to play the violin played Silent Night for us and then we all joined in singing!

We hope everyone has a lovely Christmas holiday. During the last few days of term the children raised €370 for Sligo Social Services, to help other people.  Thank you to all the families who donated so generously.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the 8th of January 2018.

Happy Christmas and New Year.

Sligo On Ice!

Some of the children in room 1 wrote about their trip to Sligo On Ice:

On Tuesday the 19th of December, the children from room 1, room 12 and room 11 went ice skating at Sligo On Ice in Stephen St. car park in town. – Kelsey & Miya

We have been planning to go to Sligo On Ice for the past three weeks. Each week we had to earn 15 dojo points. In order  to get dojo points you have to do your best in class,be a good listener, be ready to work and have a tidy table. When we counted them the  day before ice skating, we had enough dojo points. The day finally came and everybody had to have a jacket,  track suit bottoms, long socks, gloves and a spare  change of clothes- Donald & David

We left at 11AM and we walked up the hill. Teacher said there was a surprise. We kept walking past the skating rink and went to the 4 Lights for chips! After that, we walked to Sligo On Ice. We got some ice skates and put on some helmets. They gave us the safety instructions and then we got on the ice. Some people slipped and fell, and some people were holding onto the wall. Then we all got the hang of it and soon everyone was skating all around. Even some of the teachers! – Mikey & Rachel

When we got off the ice, we went over to the seats and took off our skates. We got back into our pairs and headed back to school.  We really enjoyed skating and would really recommend it to anybody. We would love to do it all over again!-Tiffany & Shayna

It’s beginning to look a lot like…..

….CHRISTMAS!

Johnny our caretaker has been very busy putting up the Christmas trees, lights and crib in the school. Lots of classes have Christmas themed displays and art work. On Friday we had our first Advent assembly. The theme was Hope and a pupil called Hope, who is in Second class  lit the first purple candle on our Advent wreath. 3rd class read out some of their hopes for this Christmas season.

Christmas Assembly in St Edward’s N.S.

We held our final Advent assembly in the hall on the last day of school term. We lit our candle on the advent wreath and prayed that we would all give and receive hope, love and joy this Christmas.

Then it was time to for children who have had very good attendance to receive their selection boxes. There were a lot of children! Those children in 3rd to 6th classes who had completed 3 whole stamp books also received and extra prize. Mrs. McGowan called them the Super Seven!

Ms Hunt presented a donation to Kerrieann and baby Robyn for the premature babies support group, which they raised from their Carol singing in The Quayside. St Vincent De Paul will also be receiving a donation from the carol singers as well. We finished up with our choir leading us in some Festive songs.

We would like to wish all the children, parents, staff and friends of St. Edward’s a happy and peaceful Christmas filled with fun. We look forward to seeing you all back on January 9th 2017!

Carol Singing in the Quayside Shopping Centre

Our school choir, from 3rd to 6th class, went carol singing in the Quayside Shopping Centre on Tuesday 20th December. Ms Hunt played the guitar, Ms. Reilly played the violin and Ms. Ferguson and Gráinne helped with the singing. Ms. Coyne and lots of parents and friends helped with the collection. Stephen from 6th class made this short movie from some of the videos and pictures he took. Well done Stephen!

They collected over €570 which they are very proud of. They will be making a donation to a  group who support families with premature babies.

Advent in St. Edward’s

Advent is the time of year when we prepare for the celebration of Christmas. We held our first Advent Assembly last week and lit a purple candle on our Advent Wreath. We listened as Mrs. McGowan spoke about the theme of Hope. Máire Hunt led everyone in song with the guitar and Senior Infants helped to prepare the crib in our reception area. Our caretaker Johnny has all our decorations up. It’s beginning to feel a lot like Christmas!

Christmas Nativity Play by 3rd Class December 2015

Third class performed the annual nativity play shortly before the holidays. We sang some of the well known Christmas carols like Silent Night and Away in a Manger. We also sang Do You Hear What I Hear? and a lovely carol translated from the Polish language called Baby Jesus. Here are some pictures and a short video clip. The video was filmed from a distance by a 6th class child on one of our school ipads.
