Summer Holidays and Attendance Raffles

We hope you are already enjoying your summer holidays and making the most of the great weather we are experiencing at the moment. Please take care of yourselves and those around you as you make the most of it, whether it is in the garden, on the street, at the beach or wherever!

A gentle reminder that school begins again on Thursday August 30th at 8:50AM for all classes. Infant classes will be going home at 12:00PM until Friday September 7th and 1:30PM after that. All other classes finish at 2:30 PM. It is very important that the children get a good start to the school year and get into routine early. The short first week will be of great benefit to the children for that reason. As a special incentive, all children who are marked present on both days of this first week will receive DOUBLE attendance raffle tickets and be entered in an EXTRA draw for some great prizes.

If you are passing the school the first week in July you will notice the volunteers from Abbvie working hard on renovating our school building. We are very excited about this opportunity and can’t wait to show everybody the finished result when we come back on August 30th. (Of course summer camp participants will be getting a sneak peek!)

Happy holidays

End of Year Assemblies

We had a number of end of year events in the school this week. We marked the retirement of teacher Ellen McKiernan on Wednesday with a school mass in our hall which was celebrated by Fr. Rooney. It also marked the graduation of our 6th class who began with a lovely procession of lights.

On Thursday, the victorious Sligo Hurling team, who won the Lory Meagher Cup in Croke Park last Sunday, came back to visit. Keith Raymond, their captain fantastic and a proud past pupil of our school, spoke passionately about the importance of following your dream, working hard and taking care of your body. He recalled a visit by Mark Scanlon to the school back in 1998 as World Junior Cycling Champion when Keith was a pupil here and the impact that had on him and his love of playing sport.

Friday was our final day. At the prize-giving assembly, the children who had very good attendance received a prize. Special mention to Kian and Melanie who did not miss even a single day! Each week, children who have not missed a day get a green slip to enter this draw and, as well as a monthly draw in each class, there is a big draw at the end of each term. Congratulations to Leon in Junior Infants whose name came out of the big draw! Team Poland won the big team prize for Sports Day and they collected their prizes from Ms Kivlehan. This was the first time that any Sports Day team had received a perfect score in all areas of co-operation and teamwork! The rounders tournament came to an exciting finale on Sports Day and the children who took part also received their medals.

Christmas Wishes from St Edward’s NS

We had our Christmas assembly today in the hall. The children who have had excellent attendance got selection boxes. Thulini won a prize for designing a beautiful school Christmas Card. The children who are learning to play the violin played Silent Night for us and then we all joined in singing!

We hope everyone has a lovely Christmas holiday. During the last few days of term the children raised €370 for Sligo Social Services, to help other people.  Thank you to all the families who donated so generously.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the 8th of January 2018.

Happy Christmas and New Year.

Final Assembly

On Friday 30th we held our final assembly before the summer holidays. We talked about  keeping safe around water and roads over the holidays and said goodbye to Ms Coyne who will be leaving us for a year. Children who have had excellent attendance received their prizes from Mrs. McGowan.

Excellent Attendance 2016 2017

Christmas Assembly in St Edward’s N.S.

We held our final Advent assembly in the hall on the last day of school term. We lit our candle on the advent wreath and prayed that we would all give and receive hope, love and joy this Christmas.

Then it was time to for children who have had very good attendance to receive their selection boxes. There were a lot of children! Those children in 3rd to 6th classes who had completed 3 whole stamp books also received and extra prize. Mrs. McGowan called them the Super Seven!

Ms Hunt presented a donation to Kerrieann and baby Robyn for the premature babies support group, which they raised from their Carol singing in The Quayside. St Vincent De Paul will also be receiving a donation from the carol singers as well. We finished up with our choir leading us in some Festive songs.

We would like to wish all the children, parents, staff and friends of St. Edward’s a happy and peaceful Christmas filled with fun. We look forward to seeing you all back on January 9th 2017!

We had an assembly on the last day of school before the holidays. We talked about Lent and getting ready for Easter. We also remembered the story of St. Patrick and Senior Infants showed everybody their St. Patrick’s Day parade hats. Mrs Henehan announced the winners of the water poster competition and all the children who have had very good attendance this term got an Easter egg! We wish everybody a safe and enjoyable holiday. See you back in school on April 4th!

Christmas Assembly 2015

We celebrated the last day of term with an assembly in the hall. We sang some Christmas Carols and lit the last purple candle on our Advent wreath. Mrs McGowan called out the names of all the children who had excellent attendance and they all received a selection box!

We raised over €1,100 euro for some very worthwhile charities over the last month. We presented a cheque to Nicole and Taylormay for Friends of The Coombe. Their little sister has spent a lot of time in The Coombe Hospital in Dublin but the good news is that she has now been moved to Sligo and is much closer to home for Christmas! Our Carol Singers had great fun carol singing in Johnston Court Shopping Centre and the money they collected was presented to Sligo Social Services to help those most in need this Christmas. We also presented a cheque to our past pupil Emma Robinson, the Sligo Rose of Tralee, who will be swimming on Christmas Morning in Rosses Point to raise funds for her trip to Chernobyl to help the sick children there. We collected this money on our non-uniform days this week.

Tonima and Kamil received prizes because their art work was chosen for our 2015 St. Edward’s Christmas Card.  Ross and Darwin in 3rd and 4th classes received a special prize from their teachers for their vocabulary work over the last few months. Well done everybody and have a happy and safe holiday!
