Happy Christmas Everybody!

We celebrated lots of good news at our last assembly of the term today-

  • The 4th Sunday of advent
  • Loads of children earning reading certificates in 3rd and 4th class,
  • The winner of our school Christmas card Design competition
  • The winner of the parents raffle for those who took part in our Parent Survey during the week
  • All the children with excellent attendance in Term 1
  • Prizes for most improved punctuality
  • The winners of our Laps to Lapland Challenge rooms 2 and 11. (We ran over 60, 000 laps of the track in December!!!)

….and we rounded it all off with a few verses of one of our favourite Christmas songs!

We wish you a very happy and peaceful Christmas full of family and fun.

Statement of Strategy of School Attendance

In line with the requirements of  Section 22 of the Education (Welfare) Act 2000, the Board of Management of each school must prepare and submit to Tusla a Statement of Strategy of School Attendance. This statement was ratified by the Board of Management on May 21st and outlines the expectations of the school regarding attendance, the strategies we employ to promote it, and the clarifies the roles of the teachers, Principal, HSCL, Parents and the Board in working towards these expectations.  The full statement can be viewed in our Parent’s Section on this website, quick link here. 

Summer Camp August 2020

Hearing the sound of children’s voices throughout the school this week really gave us a lift. We welcomed back a group of 36 children to our summer camp on Monday morning. They have been amazing us every day with their hand washing and sanitising skills. The children have been demonstrating their knowledge of how to keep themselves and others safe while working separately in their small groups.It is obvious Parents & Families have been working hard at home for the past few months to ensure the children are familiar with the ways we can try our best to keep each other safe. Summer Camp  looked a different to camps from other years but the levels of fun and happiness were just as high!

In the Junior Group we had such a brilliant week led by Ms.Marren. We were super at looking out for one another and washing our hands!Teacher wore her face mask whenever she could not social distance and we got very used to this after the first morning! We all did our very best to keep everybody safe.

Some of our favourite activities included;

Making our own lunches in the kitchen: This was such a great learning experience. Making choices about what we would like to eat, choosing our food, buttering our chosen bread and putting on our fillings. We even made our own rice krispie treats! We felt very independent .

Art and Crafts: This was another of our favourite activities. We did lots of different types of art, as you will see in our video. Painting, colour mixing, drawing, decorating, colouring and working with fabric and fibre. We were all so creative in our own ways.

Outdoor activities: We also loved getting outside and being active. We loved the running and throwing games. We worked on skills like balance, speed and coordination.

What a brilliant week – well done to the boys and girls.

Middle Group + Ms. Browne: Our week in Summer Camp was all about FUN,FUN & FUN! It was so lovely to be back in school and to see our friends and some of our Teachers too.

We had a busy week with plenty of Arts & Crafts activities, stories, outdoor games as well as Music, Dancing and even decorating our own cupcakes! We went on a Nature Walk and found some conkers by the pitch as well as listening outdoors for the many sounds around us.

Wayne O’Connor, the Storyteller came to visit on our last day of Camp and he was fantastic. He told us the story of mythical people a long time ago and he was really funny. We were so excited listening to him and watching him.

On Friday we had an ice-cream party and we really loved it. We even had yummy toppings to create our own ice creams- yummy, yummy in my tummy!

We sanitised our hands everytime we went into school and when we were leaving the school. We washed our hands throughout the day – before we ate and after we ate, whenever we sneezed or coughed and we all coughed into our elbows. Ms Browne could not believe how wonderful we were at following the guidelines about sneezing and coughing and she had her ‘proud Momm’ face’ on every day at Camp because we were so good at looking after one another!

We had a great time at Camp this week and we spent a lot of time outdoors – playing basketball, running through obstacle courses as well as doing our exercises with music.  We really enjoyed making our own lunches with help from Ms. Grimes as well as baking our Fairy Cakes in the kitchen. Decorating them was a messy job but so much fun!!!The fairy cakes were delicious.

We did lovely art and craft activities – making our own window decorations for home as well as doing music and board games in our room.

We followed social distancing guidelines and are really ready for and excited about getting back to school next Thursday – we know when to sanitise our hands and washed our hands regularly throughout the day at summer camp.

Summer Holidays & The Rose of Tralee

Parents, Grandparents & Guardians ‘YES, YOU DID IT’!!!!!!! After all the months out of school, the long days at home and all of the stresses and strains we have all had to deal with since March 13th, we are finally moving towards some ‘normality’ again. Summer holidays from school this week will bring a little sadness because of how our childrens’ school year ended so suddenly and time without their classmates and their wonderful Teachers . All of us in St.Edward’s NS feel that sadness too but we are looking forward to seeing you all again in the new school year.

Remember we got through all of this together as a TEAM and whatever is ahead of us, we will all continue to work hard with you, the parents and for you and your child. Our aim is always to do our very best for your child and for you the Parents/Guardians.

As HSCL, my job is to support you all and to be there to listen and to help in any way that I can. It is a privilege to be the ‘connection’ between each of your homes and St.Edward’s NS and I assure you I will continue to do my best for each and every one of you.

Thank you for all of the phone calls and for the wonderful conversations and chats. Thank you for your kindness and for welcoming me into your homes and for always keeping me busy!!!! It is my pleasure.

I am looking forward to getting home to Kerry to see my own Parents and spending some time with them – my own 2 kids are counting down the days until we can travel. It is exciting.

A big Hello to you all,

I hope you are all doing well. It is June already and we are all missing school so much-  Parents and Teachers! This month is always a lovely month in school with lots of activities like Fun Day and trips out etc. It will be a very different June this year but just as the picture above says, ” It won’t be like this forever.” Hopefully we will all be back together really soon  but until then, remember we are all in this together! The school building is closed but we are all still working away and here  to support and help in any way that we can.

A Big ‘Hello’ to all Parents from Aisling HSCL

Since school closed for all of us, I have been chatting to so many of you on the phone. It is so wonderful to talk to you and to hear that you are all doing well and staying safe and healthy. I enjoyed my chats with some of our super St Edward’s Pupils and those chats have raised my own spirits and  kept me feeling stronger and motivated in these challenging times for us all.

You are all doing such great things at home with your kids – colouring, reading stories, having reading time at home, playing Maths games on devices and looking at the school blog for messages from the teachers. Some families are cleaning out the garden shed together, tidying up the kitchen together and just doing lots of different things together. Remember this is all ‘learning’. You, the parents, are coming up with lovely ideas to keep the children entertained and busy (I am ‘borrowing’ some of these ideas myself for my own long days at home with my own 2 kiddies!!)

Take pictures of things you do together as a family and e mail them to teacher – lets get creative and see how amazed teacher will be!

Take this time to really enjoy being with each other- though it is not an easy time, we are all in the same boat and it is a chance for us to chat to each other and to listen to each other without the daily rush of school and making lunches for school etc.

I am so delighted to hear that you are keeping yourself and your families safe from this virus and ensuring the children are staying indoors or just going out for short bits of fresh air with you. Our school community can be very proud of how we have all worked together to stay safe and to look out for each other. (Parents, grandparents, Ms. Grimes, Trish, teachers, SNA’s , Johnny & John, Fr Noel,  as well as the children of course)

We should be very proud of our St Edward’s Community and lets continue to fight this fight together.

Summer Assembly

The sun was shining on our final day at school this year and children wore their shorts (and sunscreen!) to school where there were lots of prizes and recognition for great work and achievement.

There were prizes for the orange group who won the junior section of the sports day after scoring the highest points for excellent listening and teamwork. The raffle was held for the Active Week parents challenge and both Chloe and Yeamin came out of the draw. They won prizes for themselves and their parents who completed active challenges at home as a family that week. The Health Promoting Schools committee also received their certificates in recognition of their creativity and dedication in working towards the accreditation. Elaine Cunniffe presented our flag to us at the Fáilte Festival on June 14th. 

Our 4th class received their certs for CPR training. They have also been trained in the use of defibrillators, one of which sits inside the door of the school. 5th and 6th class also took part in a refresher course on their skills earlier this month. 

Matthew and Dean shared some great news with us. Their football team won the Sligo Leitrim Under 12  C  cup and they were allowed to bring to school to show us. Well done boys!

After that we recognised the great attendance record of a very large group of children in our school who have missed very few days. These children will be enjoying a big 99 cone in Supermacs over the holidays! There are also 4 very special people who did not miss a single day at school this year who were presented with some fun summer games for both sunny and rainy days. The final draw was for a large hamper of summer goodies. This was drawn from all the children’s tickets for the term, which they earned for each full weeks attendance. Ashley from first class was the very lucky girl whose name came out of the draw. The hamper was so big that her teacher had to carry it out to the car for her!

Before we finished, we celebrated Mrs McGowan’s last day working with the children of our school. 5th class recited a lovely poem, and the talented 3rd class played a number of tunes on their recorders. Arnas and Michelle from 5th and 4th presented her with a beautiful piece of collaborative artwork which contains the thumbprints of every child in the school. To send her on her way, we had a rousing version of We Will Miss you (sung to the tune of Queen’s We Will Rock you!). 

 

 

Easter in St. Edward’s N.S.

Today is the last day of term and we really enjoyed our Easter Egg Hunt in aid of the Charlotte Costello Fund. A huge thank you to pupils parents and staff as we collected €400 as well as eating chocolate and having fun!

At our final assembly, children with excellent and very good attendance received Easter Eggs. All the tickets from our weekly attendance slips were put into a big box and Tommy from Junior Infants was the popular winner of our giant hamper, full of goodies and things to play with over the holidays. We said a sad goodbye to Ms McGovern who is finishing up with us today, we will miss her.

Happy Easter! Have a wonderful break filled with lots of fun, rest and play.

Christmas Assembly

At our last assembly today we lit the last purple candle on our advent wreath representing peace. Fr. Noel was a special guest today and lit the last white candle, representing love and we sang Give me love in my heart at the tops of our voices!

There were a lot of happy prize winners today, children with very good and excellent attendance received a selection box each. Mirolla’s name came out of the weekly attendance box for the termly prize . Our talented artists Hope and Teyanna who designed the school  Christmas cards also got a lovely surprise as did the fastest girl and fastest boy for the Santa Mile Dash, Melanie and Kian.

We wish all pupils, parents and staff a very safe and happy Christmas. We look forward to seeing you all again on Monday January 7th at 8:50 AM!

Back to School!

Hard to believe, but yes, it really is that time of year again! Looking forward to seeing everybody back on the first day, this Thursday August 30th at 8:50 AM. Don’t forget, infant classes have a shortened day (12pm) this week and next. All other classes run until 2:30 pm
