Sizzling Hot Sports Day!

On the hottest day of the year so far, we held our sports day! There were no rain jackets or ducking in and out between showers or warm jumpers for the cold. Just buckets of sunscreen and water, shorts and t-shirts, games, fun and happy people!

Senior Tour

5th and 6th classes went on their tour this week to Donegal Adventure Centre in Bundoran and had a great day.

Once the wet suits were finally on, we headed to Rossnowlagh beach where we had some games and some instructions on the shore before jumping into the waves with our body boards.

After a well deserved lunch, we headed back outdoors to compete on the Toraíoct Adventure Challenge. There was lots of climbing and crawling and squeezing through and balancing and running and……

There were a lot of tired heads on Monday evening!

Fáilte Festival 2018

Our annual Fáilte Festival took place on Friday June 15th. The rain came down but it didn’t dampen the spirits! The day kicked off with our sponsored walk and pupils, parents, staff and guests gathered afterwards in the hall. Together we remembered Ross McCarrick, our beautiful, gentle past pupil who has sadly passed away. We lit a candle and remembered his family, friends, neighbours, teachers and everybody who is heartbroken with his passing.

We also remembered Paddy McLoughlin, a grandfather of a pupil in our school who also passed away last summer. Paddy’s legacy will live on for many years in our school as funds raised from the sponsored walk, along with a very generous donation from his family have enabled us to train all pupils from 4th to 6th classes as well as staff, in emergency response, CPR and AED (defibrillator) use. The success of the fundraising also means that we can now purchase an AED device for our school building as a life saving resource for our community.

We also came together to celebrate the retirement of Máire Hunt from our staff who has been working in St. Edward’s since 1995 as both a teacher and as our HSCL. She was presented with gifts from pupils, BOM and parents and was really suprised when the pupils performed an ABBA themed special composition called “Thank You for the Music”, ably accompanied by Rachel Farrell, a past pupil. She will be missed by all and we wish her many years of health happiness and relaxation!

We really enjoyed the kids BBQ supplied by the Clayton Hotel and residents of Globe House also created some wonderful dishes from around the world as part of their Global Kitchen initiative. Once the food was out of the way, the rest of the afternoon was for fun activities outdoors such as bubble football, bouncy castles, novelty races among others. Congrats to all our raffle winners. What a lovely day!

Sligo On Ice!

Some of the children in room 1 wrote about their trip to Sligo On Ice:

On Tuesday the 19th of December, the children from room 1, room 12 and room 11 went ice skating at Sligo On Ice in Stephen St. car park in town. – Kelsey & Miya

We have been planning to go to Sligo On Ice for the past three weeks. Each week we had to earn 15 dojo points. In order  to get dojo points you have to do your best in class,be a good listener, be ready to work and have a tidy table. When we counted them the  day before ice skating, we had enough dojo points. The day finally came and everybody had to have a jacket,  track suit bottoms, long socks, gloves and a spare  change of clothes- Donald & David

We left at 11AM and we walked up the hill. Teacher said there was a surprise. We kept walking past the skating rink and went to the 4 Lights for chips! After that, we walked to Sligo On Ice. We got some ice skates and put on some helmets. They gave us the safety instructions and then we got on the ice. Some people slipped and fell, and some people were holding onto the wall. Then we all got the hang of it and soon everyone was skating all around. Even some of the teachers! – Mikey & Rachel

When we got off the ice, we went over to the seats and took off our skates. We got back into our pairs and headed back to school.  We really enjoyed skating and would really recommend it to anybody. We would love to do it all over again!-Tiffany & Shayna

Fun and Games at the IT

On Tuesdays, we go over to the IT and the students there do some P.E. activities with us.

My class walked over to the IT.  When we got over to the IT there were coaches. We went to our section and the coaches told us their names.
Afterwards we all got split up into teams. I was with all my friends. I was really happy!

Me and my friend Kelsey were on a team together and the game was to get all the beanbags into your hoop. Whenever all the beanbags were gone from the middle, we had to steal each others.

Later we swapped sides and played Simon Says and I was so good at it! Afterwards we played handball and my team won. We were Team Green.

When we had to go we all said bye and thank you. I had the best time ever!

Primary Schools Athletics

We got ready in the hall .We walked over to the IT. It was my first time there. I felt nervous, but when my race was on I felt super. On my team were Mikey,Josh,Jamie and me. Our team finished in second place.

The weather was nice, but a bit cold. There were lots of teachers and children. I knew a lot of people there. There were also a lot of schools there.

We were the orange team. The green team came first in their heat. Gary,Herman,Emily and Aivis were the green team. They got into the finals and came in third place. We were all very happy for the green team.

We all had fun and I would love to do it again.

Our Active Week eBook

Yard Games in Room 11

In room 11 we have been thinking about new games which we can play on yard. We decided to donate €1/€2 each to new yard equipment. We collected €38 and then began researching what games/equipment we could buy with this money.

We looked through the Smyths catalogue online and agreed on a selection of board games and ball games. We play these on yard once a week.

Buzz and Kinetic sand were donated to our class by two children in Room 11.

We discussed yard games at home with our parents and one parent remembered playing skittles as a child. We decided to make our own set of skittles. Teacher cut fencing posts into equal sized skittles. In class we numbered and painted each one. We record our scores on a record sheet and we have become quite competitive!

We love playing dodge ball so we also included this game in our yard rota.

We use the track twice a week – ‘Do your walking as you’re talking’.

We also bring mats out on yard. Some people make large boxes with them while others sit on them to chat or colour.

Yard has become more interesting and we look forward to it each day.

Seachtain na Gaeilge in Room 7

Bhí an craic ar súil i seomra 7 i rith Seachtain na Gaeilge, féach ar ár bpictúirí thíos! Is maith linn an scéal An Cochaillín Dearg, mar sin, rinneamar dráma beag shimplí do na Naíonáin Shóisearacha. Mhúin siad damhsa beag Gaelach dúinn.

We had great craic in room 7 during Irish Week, just look at the photos below! We like the story of Little Red Riding Hood so we made a simple little drama for the Junior Infants. They taught us a little Irish dance!

Maths Fun at Lunch Time

Some of our 5th class girls had fun making triangular pyramids at lunch time today out of play mats. And they made lovely cosy tents.
