Summer Camp June 28th – July 2nd 2021

What a week we had at Summer Camp this year with lots of fun, discovery, sports and baking! Ms .Kivlehan, Ms. Quigley, Ms. Devaney & Ms. Browne probably had even more fun than the kids with all of the exciting activities that took place as well as a number of surprises thrown in throughout the week.

The weather really was on our side, with sunshine every day and plenty opportunities to be outside having fun with our friends and getting to know each other even better. It was a great week of exploring, learning through fun and play as well as challenging ourselves to learn new games, We went on Scavenger Hunts, did Maths Trails, searched for different types of outdoor life in the school grounds as well as enjoying walks to The Famine Graveyard where we took part in learning all about ‘history in our locality’.

Each Group had so much fun and exercise outside on the yard as well as on the pitch and the Maze. We played tag rugby, soccer, basketball and hockey. The children enjoyed the obstacle courses and some parachute fun with their friends. Other groups were challenged in orienteering tasks  and some even got to make tie-dye t-shirts. Groups were discovering science with experiments as well as  making yummy treats in the kitchen (There was probably very little left to take home to share with you all!!!)

Beautiful art was seen throughout the camp with each group using different materials and various methods to create masterpieces.  We painted with pastels and baby oil and and made ice cream cones

Ms. Grimes arrived into our classrooms on Friday with pizza for us all – what a treat for the boys and girls who were so fantastic all week long. A big ‘Thank You’ to Ms. Grimes and to Ms. Quigley for organising  this pizza party.

We had a visit from Lou from Sligo County Library on Thursday – she presented each group with their Summer Stars reading bags and told us all about the Summer Stars Programme in the Library and the great prizes that can be won. Keep an eye on our school Facebook page for more details. Lou read some lovely stories to us and we really enjoyed listening to these tales with our friends.

Get on your bike! 🚴🏾‍♀️

4th class began their Cycle Safety Training Course last week which will run for 6 weeks. Over the 6 weeks, our instructor Ciarán will teach us how to check that our bikes are roadworthy. We will also learn how to control our bikes and learn the rules of the road for cyclists.

We are really enjoying learning about cycle safety while having lots of fun.

 

More Science Fun

Bouncy Egg Experiment

  • We began this experiment by placing a raw egg in its shell into a jar and covered it with vinegar
  • We made some predictions about what would happen
  • We checked on it every day and discussed the changes to the egg.
  • After one week, the shell of the egg had become translucent.

Take a look at what happened when we bounced it…

The Science behind this experiment:

The egg becomes bouncy as a result of a chemical reaction between the eggshell and the vinegar.

The vinegar and calcium carbonate of the eggshell are reacting because of the small bubbles that form around the egg when it is placed in the vinegar. These small bubbles are carbon dioxide gas, which are the result of the reaction between calcium carbonate and vinegar.

Once the shell of the egg is gone, all that is left covering the egg is a thin membrane. The vinegar begins working on the egg’s membrane. The vinegar toughens up the membrane of the egg making it bouncy!

 

Science Week in Room 4

We were learning all about our teeth for Science Week.

After learning the correct names of the teeth and their uses, we each made a set of teeth from modelling clay.

We also made elephant toothpaste! 

The Procedure:

  • First, we mixed yeast and water together
  • Next, Ms Kelly poured the hydrogen peroxide into a small bottle
  • Then, we added food colouring and washing up liquid and swished it around a little
  • Finally, we poured the yeast and water mix into the bottle and stood back!

What happened? 

A very impressive and fast chemical reaction! Hydrogen peroxide is made up of hydrogen and oxygen.  In this experiment, yeast is the catalyst that helps release oxygen from the hydrogen peroxide solution. As the peroxide breaks down, the soap that was mixed in will also combine with the water and turn into foam. The oxygen gushing out is what makes the soap bubbles move.

October Fun – 4th Class 🍁🎃

We had another busy month having lots of fun in (and outside) Room 4.

We went outside looking for signs of Autumn and we also  made a list of any mini-beasts we could find living in our school yard.

We created Autumn Trees in Art. We have been collecting our pencil shavings over the past few weeks to use them as Autumn leaves.

Here is a slideshow of our Halloween celebrations and our Science experiment – we had some very sick pumpkins in Room 4 – they must’ve eaten a lot of treats!!

September in Room 4

What a great start to the new school year it has been!

We have been very busy in Room 4 the past month getting used to our new routines, which includes a lot of hand washing but we are just so excited to be back at school to see all our friends again after such a long time. We have enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing our interests and talents with each other this month. 

We have spent quite a bit of time using technology this month. We have been learning how to use Class Dojo, we signed up to our G-Suite accounts and we even had our first virtual assembly through Zoom. 

We particularly enjoyed the Symmetrical Self-Portraits art activity which we think really showed off our artistic talents and we are delighted with the way they turned out.  

 

4th Class Room 4 June 22nd

Hello to you all, 4th Class!

Can you believe this is the last week of school before the summer holidays? It has been a difficult time for us all not being in school since March and it is sad that your year in Room 4 was cut short. 😞 However, you should all be very proud of yourselves and your parents for all the hard work you have done since March – Well done!

If we were in school, you would have been somewhere on a school tour by now so this week I’m including some virtual school tours for you to experience instead! The first one will take you to Dingle in Co. Kerry to visit Ocean World Aquarium.

Now, you will have the opportunity to virtually leave Ireland and travel all the way to Africa. I thought you would all enjoy this after reading The Butterfly Lion this year. Here, you will have the opportunity to watch live sightings of animals in the wild African bush.

4th Class Room 4 June 15th

Good morning 4th Class!

I hope you are all well and that you all enjoyed the weekend. You will all have hopefully received your activity packs by now. You are free to work through these at your own pace over the next two weeks.

As you will see, the activity pack includes some fun end of year activities with plenty of colouring and word searches and a few surprises!

It also includes some very important information about water safety and some safety rules for you to follow this summer when you are near water. Read these carefully, sign the bottom of the page and put it on your fridge or somewhere you will see it every day to remind you of the rules.

St. Edward’s NS, ‘Sports Week’ – such a fun week planned for all the pupils of St.Edward’s. It is not just for the pupils though- its a fun filled week for all of the family. So let us all get ready for some exercise, some excitement and great laughs together!

This week is all about taking time together as a family to do various fun filled activities and to let your hair down! No matter what age we are, we all want to laugh and we all love to get involved in games and some really exciting activities. Our children deserve some real fun this week and the teachers have planned lots of simple games etc for you all to enjoy. Don’t forget to send pictures to your teacher of your family enjoying St. Edward’s NS Sports Week. We love to see you all and your pictures really cheer us up!

Keep an eye on St. Edward’s NS Facebook Page every day this week and you might see some familiar faces demonstrating the various games and activities!!! ( Look out for the Kerry Flag during the week!!!!)

A big Hello to you all,

I hope you are all doing well. It is June already and we are all missing school so much-  Parents and Teachers! This month is always a lovely month in school with lots of activities like Fun Day and trips out etc. It will be a very different June this year but just as the picture above says, ” It won’t be like this forever.” Hopefully we will all be back together really soon  but until then, remember we are all in this together! The school building is closed but we are all still working away and here  to support and help in any way that we can.
