We had an exciting day today in 2nd class – we baked cookies!
We weighed out the ingredients, mixed them all up and baked them in the oven. Everyone had a chance to join in and roll out their own cookie.
We enjoyed our cookies during Golden Time.

In November and December, we have been working our way through the Stay Safe programme. As part of this programme and for Anti-Bullying Week last month, we have been learning how to prevent bullying and what to do if we or someone we know is bullied.
We discussed and wrote down our ideas. We made a display from them all. We also made a class contract and we all signed our names to show we will try our best to follow the rules.

We have been SO busy this Winter in 2nd class. We have been working hard and done so many fun things over the past few weeks.
- We helped to build willow huts in our garden with Martina.
- We prepared a song, poem and Art for our Christmas Performance (did you get your ticket??)
- We learned all about Ms. Middleton’s favourite animal (penguins) in SESE and learned how to draw them in Art.
- We worked in pairs to research our own favourite animals using the iPads. We looked up videos on how to draw them too.
- We are working really hard on our spellings and phonics in English. We have nearly filled a whole door with all our new sounds!!
- In Maths, we have been working on fractions and symmetry. We drew some pictures and sorted fractions using counters.
- Some children from class read prayers for our first Advent assembly (we did a fantastic job by the way).
- We did some Christmas art including a drawing webinar with Irish author and illustrator Sarah Bowie.
Phew! I can’t wait to see what they get up to next term.

Aishling Kilkenny (SCP) Evert & Elsa (Roots of Empathy Teacher)
The Roots of Empathy Programme is currently running in 2nd class , with our wonderful Mom Evert & of course our Roots of Empathy Teacher, Baby Elsa.
Aishling from School Completion Programme, is delivering the Programme and works with 2nd Class & Ms Middleton each week. The Programme is a 27 week programme and aims to reduce levels of aggression among school children by raising social-emotional competence and increasing empathy.
At the heart of the programme is a baby (Elsa) and parent (Evert) who visit the classroom every three weeks during the school year. A trained Roots of Empathy instructor (Aishling) coaches the children to observe the baby’s development and to label the baby’s feelings. The baby is the ‘teacher’ in this experiential learning, while the instructor helps the children identify and reflect on their own feelings.
Well done to everyone involved and especially to Baby Elsa who is just a ‘superstar’!!
October was a busy month for 2nd class learning about all things Autumn. We created Autumn trees inspired by the artist Picasso.
We went on many walks searching for signs of Autumn and we also went in search for as many different materials we could find on the school yard. We found everything on our checklist!
We made some delicious berry smoothies and dipped apples in melted chocolate – Yummy!
And finally, we had the most fun on the day we broke up for our midterm break – celebrating Halloween at school. We dressed up and played games like ‘Pin the wart on the witch’ and ‘Musical Zombies’. We put our hands into some mystery boxes and felt some creepy things too!
What a great start to the new school year we have had in Room 10. Everyone is settling back really well into Second Class.
It has been so lovely to be back learning and spending time with our friends again!
We have been very busy creating wonderful art this month. We drew our self-portraits and designed our names in a graffiti-style art.
We also read the story of ‘The Dot’. We then used our imaginations to create a piece of art out of one black dot. Look at the amazing ideas we came up with. What a creative bunch we have in 2nd class!
What a week we had at Summer Camp this year with lots of fun, discovery, sports and baking! Ms .Kivlehan, Ms. Quigley, Ms. Devaney & Ms. Browne probably had even more fun than the kids with all of the exciting activities that took place as well as a number of surprises thrown in throughout the week.
The weather really was on our side, with sunshine every day and plenty opportunities to be outside having fun with our friends and getting to know each other even better. It was a great week of exploring, learning through fun and play as well as challenging ourselves to learn new games, We went on Scavenger Hunts, did Maths Trails, searched for different types of outdoor life in the school grounds as well as enjoying walks to The Famine Graveyard where we took part in learning all about ‘history in our locality’.
Each Group had so much fun and exercise outside on the yard as well as on the pitch and the Maze. We played tag rugby, soccer, basketball and hockey. The children enjoyed the obstacle courses and some parachute fun with their friends. Other groups were challenged in orienteering tasks and some even got to make tie-dye t-shirts. Groups were discovering science with experiments as well as making yummy treats in the kitchen (There was probably very little left to take home to share with you all!!!)
Beautiful art was seen throughout the camp with each group using different materials and various methods to create masterpieces. We painted with pastels and baby oil and and made ice cream cones
Ms. Grimes arrived into our classrooms on Friday with pizza for us all – what a treat for the boys and girls who were so fantastic all week long. A big ‘Thank You’ to Ms. Grimes and to Ms. Quigley for organising this pizza party.
We had a visit from Lou from Sligo County Library on Thursday – she presented each group with their Summer Stars reading bags and told us all about the Summer Stars Programme in the Library and the great prizes that can be won. Keep an eye on our school Facebook page for more details. Lou read some lovely stories to us and we really enjoyed listening to these tales with our friends.

St. Edward’s NS, ‘Sports Week’ – such a fun week planned for all the pupils of St.Edward’s. It is not just for the pupils though- its a fun filled week for all of the family. So let us all get ready for some exercise, some excitement and great laughs together!
This week is all about taking time together as a family to do various fun filled activities and to let your hair down! No matter what age we are, we all want to laugh and we all love to get involved in games and some really exciting activities. Our children deserve some real fun this week and the teachers have planned lots of simple games etc for you all to enjoy. Don’t forget to send pictures to your teacher of your family enjoying St. Edward’s NS Sports Week. We love to see you all and your pictures really cheer us up!
Keep an eye on St. Edward’s NS Facebook Page every day this week and you might see some familiar faces demonstrating the various games and activities!!! ( Look out for the Kerry Flag during the week!!!!)

A big Hello to you all,
I hope you are all doing well. It is June already and we are all missing school so much- Parents and Teachers! This month is always a lovely month in school with lots of activities like Fun Day and trips out etc. It will be a very different June this year but just as the picture above says, ” It won’t be like this forever.” Hopefully we will all be back together really soon but until then, remember we are all in this together! The school building is closed but we are all still working away and here to support and help in any way that we can.

Below, is a poem, written by a Mom in the U.K – this poem has become a social media sensation! Enjoy reading it- I hope it gives you all hope and encouragement. As a Mommy, it really helped to remind me that we are all doing our best for something very important. We can do this together!
‘The Rainbow Children’
The history books will talk of now,
That time the world stood still.
When every family stayed at home,
Waved out from windowsills-
At those they loved but could not hold,
Because they loved them so.
Yet, whilst they did they noticed all the flowers start to grow.
The sun came out, they can recall,
And windows, rainbows filled.
They kicked a football in their yards,
Until the night drew in.
They walked each day but not too close,
That time the world stood still.
When people walked straight down the roads,
That once the cars did fill.
They saw that people became ill,
They knew the world was scared.
But whilst the world stood still they saw,
How much the whole world cared.
They clapped on Thursdays from their doors,
They cheered for the brave.
For people who would risk their lives,
So others could be saved.
The schools closed down, they missed their friends,
They missed their teachers so.
Their Mam’s and Dad’s helped with their work,
They helped their minds to grow.
The parents used to worry that,
As schools were put on hold,
Their children wouldn’t have the tools,
They’d need as they grew old.
But history books will talk of them,
Now adults, fully grown.
Those little boys and girls back then,
The ones who stayed at home.
They’ll tell you that they fixed this world,
Of all they would fulfill.
The RAINBOW children building dreams,
They’d dreamed whilst time stood still
Stay safe, stay calm and share your laughter.
