Hello Everybody,
Welcome to your last week of school before summer holidays and congratulations on coming to the end of 1st class! I would just like to say that even though we didn’t get to see each other in person, it was great to be your teacher for the last six weeks. It’s not easy to keep doing work from home so you’ve all (kids, mums and dads!) done a super job and well done!
For your last week we are going on a virtual school tour to look at some very cool animals.
I know a real trip to the zoo would be brilliant but the great thing about the internet is that we can visit any zoo or aquarium around the world. So click on these links for a great opportunity to look at all the amazing animals in Dublin Zoo, Chester Zoo, San Diego Zoo and The Monterey Aquarium. You might discover your new favourite animal!

Hello everybody,
Welcome to your last full week of school in 1st class! I hope you had good fun trying some of the sports games last week!
You have your final pack which includes general activities and colouring sheets. I’ve also put in some sheets based on the zoo and water safety. Next week I will put some virtual tours on the blog for you to choose from but this week I would love you to have a look at water safety. Learning about being safe around water is so important so please do take some time to go through this together and have a go at the activities after.
This is a little story about a seal called Murphy. It is based on a real life seal rescue that happened in Sligo!

St. Edward’s NS, ‘Sports Week’ – such a fun week planned for all the pupils of St.Edward’s. It is not just for the pupils though- its a fun filled week for all of the family. So let us all get ready for some exercise, some excitement and great laughs together!
This week is all about taking time together as a family to do various fun filled activities and to let your hair down! No matter what age we are, we all want to laugh and we all love to get involved in games and some really exciting activities. Our children deserve some real fun this week and the teachers have planned lots of simple games etc for you all to enjoy. Don’t forget to send pictures to your teacher of your family enjoying St. Edward’s NS Sports Week. We love to see you all and your pictures really cheer us up!
Keep an eye on St. Edward’s NS Facebook Page every day this week and you might see some familiar faces demonstrating the various games and activities!!! ( Look out for the Kerry Flag during the week!!!!)

A big Hello to you all,
I hope you are all doing well. It is June already and we are all missing school so much- Parents and Teachers! This month is always a lovely month in school with lots of activities like Fun Day and trips out etc. It will be a very different June this year but just as the picture above says, ” It won’t be like this forever.” Hopefully we will all be back together really soon but until then, remember we are all in this together! The school building is closed but we are all still working away and here to support and help in any way that we can.

Below, is a poem, written by a Mom in the U.K – this poem has become a social media sensation! Enjoy reading it- I hope it gives you all hope and encouragement. As a Mommy, it really helped to remind me that we are all doing our best for something very important. We can do this together!
‘The Rainbow Children’
The history books will talk of now,
That time the world stood still.
When every family stayed at home,
Waved out from windowsills-
At those they loved but could not hold,
Because they loved them so.
Yet, whilst they did they noticed all the flowers start to grow.
The sun came out, they can recall,
And windows, rainbows filled.
They kicked a football in their yards,
Until the night drew in.
They walked each day but not too close,
That time the world stood still.
When people walked straight down the roads,
That once the cars did fill.
They saw that people became ill,
They knew the world was scared.
But whilst the world stood still they saw,
How much the whole world cared.
They clapped on Thursdays from their doors,
They cheered for the brave.
For people who would risk their lives,
So others could be saved.
The schools closed down, they missed their friends,
They missed their teachers so.
Their Mam’s and Dad’s helped with their work,
They helped their minds to grow.
The parents used to worry that,
As schools were put on hold,
Their children wouldn’t have the tools,
They’d need as they grew old.
But history books will talk of them,
Now adults, fully grown.
Those little boys and girls back then,
The ones who stayed at home.
They’ll tell you that they fixed this world,
Of all they would fulfill.
The RAINBOW children building dreams,
They’d dreamed whilst time stood still

Hello everybody in 1st class!
I hope you are all keeping well! I’m very happy that I get to be your teacher until the end of June. The video I made might help you remember me! I hear you have been doing great work and I’m sure you’ve all been helping lots at home too. You all have your May packs so we will move onto week 2 with those. There are activities to choose from below to help you along . I hope you enjoy trying some of them and let me know how you get on. I would absolutely love to hear what you have been up to. Don’t forget to try out a joke I’ve added below on someone, or if you have a joke, I’d love to hear it!

This week we are looking at ‘ar’ words. We call this a ‘bossy r’ sound because the ‘r’ makes most of the sound. We are also learning about common nouns. Maybe you found some common nouns that have ‘ar’ in them! Keep writing your news and use the ‘ar’ words for your spellings for this week.

This week your worksheets are all about length. Can you……
- Guess how tall you are on a wall? get someone to measure you and see if you are right? Try someone else? Who is the tallest and who is the shortest? I bet you have grown!
- Get measuring! You can use your feet and your hands to measure the length of long things, or try pasta/cereal/colouring pencils to measure shorter things, Try and guess the length first and see how close you were.
- Try jumping from the lowest you can go to the highest 5 times, or see how many jumps you can do in 10 seconds

We now know for certain that we will not be back together at school before the summer holidays. Though this is upsetting and difficult to understand, it really is the best decision to keep us all healthy and safe from Covid-19.
All of us in St.Edward’s are working hard to support you and your child/children and to listen.I know many parents are worried and anxious about the next couple of months and the time missed in school. Some parents are worried about September and getting back to school or moving to secondary school.Perhaps you are worried about your younger child who is starting school with us in September. There are lots of things we, as parents feel worried about right now but remember we are here to listen and to help you with all of these concerns. The pupils and parents are disappointed about First Communion and Confirmation but these celebrations will be all the more special when they do take place, in safer times for everyone.
Please know that we will continue to work hard to help you and your child in whatever way we can . My HSCL Phone is on everyday 086 7769756 and I am happy to listen, to chat and to support you. Since school closed for all of us, I have been chatting to so many of you on the phone. It is so wonderful to talk to you and to hear that you are all doing well and staying safe and healthy. I enjoyed my chats with some of our super St Edward’s Pupils and those chats have raised my own spirits and kept me feeling stronger and motivated in these challenging times for us all.
You are all doing such great things at home with your kids – colouring, reading stories, having reading time at home, playing Maths games on devices and looking at the school blog for messages from the teachers. Some families are cleaning out the garden shed together, tidying up the kitchen together and just doing lots of different things together. Remember this is all ‘learning’. You, the parents, are coming up with lovely ideas to keep the children entertained and busy (I am ‘borrowing’ some of these ideas myself for my own long days at home with my own 2 kiddies!!)
Take pictures of things you do together as a family and e mail them to teacher – lets get creative and see how amazed teacher will be!
Take this time to really enjoy being with each other- though it is not an easy time, we are all in the same boat and it is a chance for us to chat to each other and to listen to each other without the daily rush of school and making lunches for school etc.
I am so delighted to hear that you are keeping yourself and your families safe from this virus and ensuring the children are staying indoors or just going out for short bits of fresh air with you. Our school community can be very proud of how we have all worked together to stay safe and to look out for each other. (Parents, grandparents, Ms. Grimes, Trish, teachers, SNA’s , Johnny & John, Fr Noel, as well as the children of course)
We should be very proud of our St Edward’s Community and lets continue to fight this fight together.
