2nd class had great fun learning about chemical reactions. To prepare for our science experiment we carved out pumpkins.
We put some bread soda into the pumpkins. We then mixed vinegar and green food colouring together.
When we poured the vinegar mixture into the pumpkins the bread soda and vinegar created a chemical reaction. The pumpkins began to vomit as the green foam flowed from their mouths!
A huge congratulation to 6th class students who took part in the Abbvie STEM prize for 2025 last school term. The aim of the competition was to inspire primary school pupils to think about challenges in their localities and to use skills learned in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math’s to come up with solutions that will make a positive impact. Our School took part in a beach clean up with Flossie and the Beach Cleaners who are a Dublin based environmental group who offer workshops and beach clean up days across the country. The children analyzed the rubbish they had found into categories, made pie charts and used their creative Science minds to design new equipment for younger people who take part in the beach clean ups. We were delighted to heat that we had won the prize of new Science equipment for the school, a fun interactive Science workshop in the school for kids and a funded trip to an SEAI research center as well as a visit to our local Abbvie plant nearby.
Everyone in St. Edward’s NS showed their engineering skills this week.
Our engineering challenge was to drop eggs from the top of a truck without breaking them. Something that we had never imagined we could do but we would give it a go and try and rise to this challenge.
First we learned all about the role of an engineer with a talk from engineer, Alan .
In groups we came up with plans and a design on how we could protect the egg from breaking while being dropped. Using a variety of materials we constructed our designs, always keeping in mind the safety of the egg.
Finally, the moment we had been waiting for, putting our contraptions to the test. There was great excitement when then the eggs were being dropped. Due to our great engineering achievements, the majority of eggs, landed in one piece.

We all had a smashing time!
We have been so busy in Senior Infants across November & December. Have a look at our video collage of us in action – we learned all about houses and homes, became architects & builders, played as different roles in the family home and designed homes for the three pigs.
We had so much fun as scientists during science week, predicting and experimenting with gummy bears, vegetables and salt density in water and coding with BeeBots. We also made rainbows too!
We were very busy in December preparing for, practising, recording and editing our Christmas concert – We had so much fun! We also got a surprise when Santa arrived in our classroom!!!! And we got to eat some smarties in Maths – we created a block graph to show the data of the smarties in our box – everyone’s block chart was different in the end.
We were so busy in the Ark in November that I forgot to add my blog post! We were super busy during Science week. We worked with Beebots (see previous Beebots post) and also made our own Lava lamps in class using water, food coloring, oil and an Alka Seltzer tablet. It was fun to watch the oil and bubbles turn into a Lava Lamp like the one I have on my table.
Our theme this month was Owls and we learned lots of interesting Owl facts and read the story Owl Babies. We made some lovely Art and finished off the theme with some procedural writing and making Owl Toast. Once we finished up in the kitchen, we tidied up and made sure the kitchen was ready for the next class to use.
The children in the Ark were also busy intergrating back into their mainstream class this month and they also managed to get some down time on the swings and outside in the sun for a spot of tennis!
All in all, a very busy and fun month!
We had great fun going on a bug hunt with Martina Butler from the Heritage in Schools Scheme. Martina came into our classroom and showed us pictures of different types of bugs that we could find around our school. She talked about the different parts of the bugs body, how many legs they have and where they all live. Then we went on a bug hunt around our school. We found snails, slugs, woodlouse and worms. We used bug pots to put our bugs into. Then at the end we let our bugs free to their homes outside.
We also made willow tunnels with Martina. Some of the 6th class children helped us to plant our willow trees and then we twisted the trees together to make a tunnel. It was great fun.
We were so lucky be working with Martina Butler from the Heritage in Schools Scheme over the past couple of weeks.
Last year, we started our Greenwave project with the aim of developing our outdoor play areas and improving our schoolgrounds to make it a more diverse place for plants and animals.
As part of this and to link with our Greenschool’s programme we are continuing to learn about biodiversity in our area.
Martina has worked with every class in the school on various projects over the past couple of weeks.
We have gone on bug hunts searching for bugs and insects on our schoolground and we have created a biodiversity map of our school grounds.
We are upgrading our bug hotel hoping more bugs are going to come on their holidays.
Last week we constructed some fabulous new willow huts. This is helping our environment by planting more trees but also they will be great place for fun and games when the leaves grow in early March. It was a lot of hard work digging and planting the trees but well worth it!
This week in Ireland it is Science Week 2022. During Science we will be exploring and experimenting in our role as scientists learning new facts about the world around us.
Today, we did an experiment called ‘The Bewitched Egg’.
Here’s why: when you add salt to the water, you increase the density of the water by adding more mass in the same volume of water. The density of the water becomes higher than the egg and so the egg floats.
We then did the experiment again with a carrot and potato slice. Some predicted at first that the vegetables would float in plain water as they felt lighter than the egg and were surprised to see them sink. After adding salt, the vegetables floated too! Overall water density was higher with salt added.
BEEBOTS! The Ark class really enjoyed their Beebots Lesson this morning. Everyone was busy learning about coding and algorithms. They got their Bee Robots moving firstly around the table and then around a farm, finding all the farm animals.
This year we worked on 4 projects for the ESB Science Blast. There was a lot of work and effort put into the research, presentation and team work. Our 4 topics included:
– What Causes headaches/ what happens inside the brain
– Will Crypto Currency replace our digital banking
– If the Meteor wiped out/ vaporised the dinosaurs, why are the bones remaining
– How do escalators work/ operate.
