Learning All About 3-D Shapes in Maths

Last week in Ms. Monaghan’s maths class, we were learning all about 3-D shapes. We explored the names and properties of different shapes, focusing on their faces, edges and vertices.

To help us understand these ideas better, we made our own 3-D shapes using marshmallows and spaghetti! This fun activity helped us clearly see how edges join at vertices to form different shapes. It was a great hands-on way to bring maths to life!

We also learned about the nets of 3-D shapes and how flat shapes can be folded and constructed to make solid objects. By examining and building nets, we gained a better understanding of how 3-D shapes are formed.

It was an enjoyable and engaging week of learning and everyone had great fun becoming 3-D shape experts! 🧊📐

Maths Week 2024

To celebrate Maths Week 2024, third class invited parents to come in and play some Maths games. We had great fun together!

The children also enjoyed large Maths games in the school hall.

3D Shapes in Senior Infants

Senior infants have been working very hard at learning all about 3D shapes. We learned about the properties of the shapes – that means how the shapes are made up.  We learned about a cube, cuboid, sphere and cylinder.

A cube is like a box – because it is 3D, you can pick it up. It has 6 faces which are square in shape, 12 sides and 12 corners. We built cubes using marshmallows and matchsticks. Have a look at our cubes below:

Friday Treats in 2nd Class

We had an exciting day today in 2nd class – we baked cookies!

 

We weighed out the ingredients, mixed them all up and baked them in the oven. Everyone had a chance to join in and roll out their own cookie.

 

We enjoyed our cookies during Golden Time.

Integration in the Ark

For Term 2 in the Ark we are really focusing on integration with our mainstream classes and also reverse integration, where our friends from mainstream come to the Ark classroom for a visit. We started integration last term but have turned it up a couple of notches! We have been working so hard with  mainstream teachers, SNA’s and of course the boys and girls from both mainstream class and the Ark who have been so welcoming and supportive to all. It been a long time since we have integrated because of the Coronavirus but the children have rejoined their classes like fish to water! Not only have they joined classes like Phonics, SESE and Art but they have taken part in concerts and outings with their classes. There’s a lot more planned for the rest of the year so watch this space!

Christmas in Junior Infants

There were lots of Christmas activities going on in Junior Infants this month. Have a look at our slideshow of photos and videos and you will see all the activities we did in Aistear. We had our Santa’s Grotto, where we dressed up as Santa or the elves or reindeers and designed toys, made them and we really enjoyed wrapping them up and putting them into Santa’s sack or under the Christmas Tree. 

We made lots of Christmas art, Christmas wreaths, stockings, trees, cards, jumpers, lights, candy canes, snowflakes, snowmen. We found lots of Christmas words in our snow area outside. We had a visit from Santa who brought us lovely treats. 

In PE, we played Reindeer tag and lots of games using the parachute. We played lots of fun Christmas games on the iPads and on the board. We had our Christmas performance where we sang songs and dressed up in our Christmas jumpers. 

We put the baby Jesus into our school crib and said our prayers. Fr Noel came into our classroom and gave us lovely Christmas cards. We had a visit from Milo the rescue dog. 

We made snowmen out of marshmallows and decorated them using coloured icing. Ms Cormican came into our classroom and showed us real Reindeer antlers which got caught in a tree beside her house one Christmas eve. We made sets, patterns and learned all about the number 2 and 3 in maths.

Finally we got to go on a trip to the Hawkswell to see a Christmas performance, which we really enjoyed.
