We spent yesterday afternoon harvesting some of the vegetables that we have been growing in our vegetable garden over the past few months. Our potatoes, salad leaves, onions and radishes did particularly well this year. We have another little while to wait on our beans, beetroots, garlic and carrots but we very much look forward to trying these tasty vegetables very soon too.
We were absolutely thrilled to attend the Green Schools Awards ceremony on Tuesday in Claremorris where we received our 7th Green School Flag for Global Citizenship Energy. Zara and Mollie collected the flag on behalf of the Green School’s Committee. All the children and staff have worked so hard over the past couple of years learning and raising awareness of what it means to be a Global Citizen and how we can conserve energy for a brighter future. We want to thank our Green School Committee for their hard work and dedication over the past two years and we hope they will maintain their passion as Global Citizens in making the world a safer, cleaner and more sustainable place for the future.
Today some of our Green Schools Committee, along with some volunteers, planted the first of our School Garden bulbs. We planted garlic and onions today. These will hopefully be ready for harvesting in June. We will be putting a special cover over the bed to keep the bulbs safe from the frost and cold weather over the coming months. Our next set of seeds to be planted will be in March. Let’s hope the weather has improved by then.
On Tuesday 3rd, 4th and 6th class took part in Nature’s Energy Workshops with Martina Butler from Heritage In Schools. We had a fantastic day learning all about where Nature gets its energy from and how this is used. We also learned a lot about how we can be responsible global citizens and better take care of nature all around us. We played games where we learned more about energy in nature and we got to do a bug hunt around the ATU ground in the sun. Lots of learning and lots of fun.
Thanks to all the children that cycled walked or scooted to school today. It was lovely to see you all arriving on your bikes and scooters. We hope you enjoyed your journey on such a beautiful morning.
On Wednesday our Green Schools Committee organised a spring clean around our school, car park and the church. We had lots of volunteers and we collected lots of rubbish.

Our Green School Committee
We are very proud to be working towards our 7th Green School Flag. Over the next 18 months we will be working hard towards our Global Citizenship Energy Flag. Our committee have been extremely busy so far this year reintroducing many of our pre-covid Green School initiatives. We have reintroduced battery recycling, composting, ‘Last Out Lights Off’, and recycling. We are also very busy organising our big An Taisce Spring Clean which will be taking place in the school on Wednesday 19th April. Make sure to keep up to date with all our Green School work on our blog, Facebook page and on our Green School Notice Board in the school.
We have had a very busy few weeks in the Parents Room with 2 two very successful workshops.
Make Up Session:
Early in December, the wonderful Caroline Wimsey ran a Make Up Workshop for Parents. It was a lovely morning with Caroline sharing her make up skills and talents with us.

Flower Arranging:
On Friday 16th, Martina Kilian joined us to help us to create floral center pieces for Christmas. We used materials that can be easily found in our homes- ribbons, old decorations and recyclable containers. The 6th Class pupils helped Ms Browne to gather greenery from around the school grounds.
It was a great morning and these Parents are so creative yet didn’t think so at the start of the workshop. Their pieces are beautiful!
Lots of creativity, chocolate, coffee and Christmas music- a morning to remember!

We were so lucky be working with Martina Butler from the Heritage in Schools Scheme over the past couple of weeks.
Last year, we started our Greenwave project with the aim of developing our outdoor play areas and improving our schoolgrounds to make it a more diverse place for plants and animals.
As part of this and to link with our Greenschool’s programme we are continuing to learn about biodiversity in our area.
Martina has worked with every class in the school on various projects over the past couple of weeks.
We have gone on bug hunts searching for bugs and insects on our schoolground and we have created a biodiversity map of our school grounds.
We are upgrading our bug hotel hoping more bugs are going to come on their holidays.
Last week we constructed some fabulous new willow huts. This is helping our environment by planting more trees but also they will be great place for fun and games when the leaves grow in early March. It was a lot of hard work digging and planting the trees but well worth it!
