Active School Week

We had great fun last week for Active School Week.

On Thursday, we played gaelic and learned lots of drills including how to pass and solo the ball. We played games which were great fun and helped improve our ball handling skills.

Friday was a very busy day with swimming in the Clayton Hotel, a soccer league in the Sligo IT and the juniors took part in Athletics on the Running Track over in Sligo IT.

Throughout the week we had our Walking Lap Challenge on our School Track. Every time we walked or ran a lap we ticked it on our board. At the end of each day we counted to see how many laps we completed for the day.  On Thursday we completed over 350 laps!!!

Every morning we started the day with our Shake up and Wake up dance. I think our favourite dance had to be the ‘Cha Cha Slide’ which got everyone moving.

Some of the classes took on the 60 minute a day Physical Activity Challenge as part of their Active Homework.

We really enjoyed our Active Week this year.

Science in Room 1

Have a look our Wiggle Bot project that we worked on back in term 1!

Spring I Spy

1st Class have been learning lots about spring recently. We have discovered that a lot of flowers grow in this season and that many baby animals are born. Birds are also busy building nests for their young and swallows will soon return from Africa. This week, we have looked at different life cycles – the frog has been really interesting to learn about.

Here are some photos from our walk last week when we searched for signs of spring around the school and at the Clayton Hotel.

Active School Week

Active School Week has gotten off to a great start.

Even with a windy start to the week, the children from Junior Infants to Second class visited the Astro Turf in Sligo IT.  They took part in fun relays and running games.

While the senior children from third to sixth class enjoyed soccer training with Darragh Healy from FAI.

On Wednesday, we started the day with Shake up and Wake up, with Ms. Quigley leading us in the Macarena dance.

Gerry Ferguson , Tug-O-War National Coach came in and the seniors learned the best skills on how to compete in Tug-O-War.

The Juniors had great fun climbing and jumping on the Gymnastic frames.

Looking forward to more activities tomorrow.

Making our own playdough

Second  class had great fun making their own play dough for golden time. We used:

  • flour
  • vegetable oil
  • food colouring
  • Cornflour
  • salt
  • water

Here are some pictures of us having fun with what we made .

Soccer Blitz at the Showgrounds

Today some of our children got to display their super soccer skills. Our girls played 3 games in the morning. While our boys got to play 4 games in the afternoon. There were some great goals scored throughout the day. There were also some great saves by both Oliwia and Mikey in goals.

We had a great day out and no doubt Sligo Rovers have  a few stars in the making!

Spring Hunt

We went on our Spring Hunt today to check for all the signs of Spring around our school.

We  had our own Spring Hunt Checklist and we were going to tick off all the things we saw in our school.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day.

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from Junior Infants.

SEAI Energy Workshop

On Tuesday 13th of March, Room 1 participated in a science workshop organised by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland.

First, we took part in a discussion during which we learned lots of interesting facts about where we get our electricity from. We learned about the different places we can get energy from, the importance of saving energy and the importance of looking after our planet by recycling.

We then carried out some experiments. We used energy from a potato to light a light bulb! We also trapped gas inside a small tube which caused it to explode.

Lastly, we played a life size board game. We used all the facts we learned during the workshop to compete against each other in groups.

It was a very interesting and exciting workshop.
