A New Year in St. Edward’s

Happy New Year to everybody in our school community. We look forward to a great 2018. It wasn’t very hard to smile as we came to school this morning with this beautiful sunrise! (View of SIT from our school yard)

Christmas Wishes from St Edward’s NS

We had our Christmas assembly today in the hall. The children who have had excellent attendance got selection boxes. Thulini won a prize for designing a beautiful school Christmas Card. The children who are learning to play the violin played Silent Night for us and then we all joined in singing!

We hope everyone has a lovely Christmas holiday. During the last few days of term the children raised €370 for Sligo Social Services, to help other people.  Thank you to all the families who donated so generously.

We look forward to seeing everyone on the 8th of January 2018.

Happy Christmas and New Year.

Sligo On Ice!

Some of the children in room 1 wrote about their trip to Sligo On Ice:

On Tuesday the 19th of December, the children from room 1, room 12 and room 11 went ice skating at Sligo On Ice in Stephen St. car park in town. – Kelsey & Miya

We have been planning to go to Sligo On Ice for the past three weeks. Each week we had to earn 15 dojo points. In order  to get dojo points you have to do your best in class,be a good listener, be ready to work and have a tidy table. When we counted them the  day before ice skating, we had enough dojo points. The day finally came and everybody had to have a jacket,  track suit bottoms, long socks, gloves and a spare  change of clothes- Donald & David

We left at 11AM and we walked up the hill. Teacher said there was a surprise. We kept walking past the skating rink and went to the 4 Lights for chips! After that, we walked to Sligo On Ice. We got some ice skates and put on some helmets. They gave us the safety instructions and then we got on the ice. Some people slipped and fell, and some people were holding onto the wall. Then we all got the hang of it and soon everyone was skating all around. Even some of the teachers! – Mikey & Rachel

When we got off the ice, we went over to the seats and took off our skates. We got back into our pairs and headed back to school.  We really enjoyed skating and would really recommend it to anybody. We would love to do it all over again!-Tiffany & Shayna

Santa Mile Dash

On Thursday 21st December, we went over to the Sligo IT running track to take part in our first Santa Mile Dash. Everyone from Junior Infants to 6th and including the staff got dressed up as Santa Claus or reindeers and even some elves.

Our aim was to try and walk or run a mile. It was great fun and we really got into the Christmas spirit with Christmas music in the background.

We estimated that we ran over 180 miles. That is the same distance as it is from Sligo to Cork!!

Well done everyone and a special well done to Tommy from Room 1 who ran the fastest mile on the day.

Festive fun

Excitement is building in Room 9 as we count down the number of sleeps until the BIG day. During Advent, we have coloured in a candle each week in preparation for Christmas Day. We have been learning Christmas poems and songs, making Christmas cards and decorations, and even taking part in a ‘Santa Dash’ on the I.T track!

We also had a visit from Santa himself and he really enjoyed our poems about him. Wishing all the children and their families a wonderful Christmas and a happy new year. See you all in 2018!

Christmas Week in Junior Infants.

We have had a very busy week getting ready for Christmas.

We have been learning about ‘The Nativity’.  We put baby Jesus into our manger in school as we won’t be here on Christmas Day.  We saw Mary, Joseph, the Shepherds, the Wise Men and of course the animals that were in the stable when Jesus was born. We also got to see 3rd class perform their Nativity play. It  was excellent.

On Wednesday, our parents came into our school and we performed a poem and some Christmas songs. We dressed up and got our faces painted.  We liked having our parents at school.

On Thursday, all the school went over to Sligo IT track for our Santa Mile Dash. We wore Santa hats and some of us dressed up. We ran around the track listening to Christmas music. It was great fun. We estimated that between all of us we ran approximately 180 miles which is the same distance  if you were travelling from Sligo to Co. Cork!!!!!

We also had a very special visitor to our class.  Santa came to our class. We were so happy to see him because he is very busy at the moment. He brought everyone a special treat. Thank you Santa.

I think after all this we are ready for our Christmas holidays. Happy Christmas everyone.

Christmas Tree Decorations

In Room 12 we made Christmas tree decorations for the tree in our classroom. We used the following salt dough recipe:

1 cup of plain flour

1/2 cup of salt

1/2 cup of water

We baked the decorations in the oven for 1 hour on a low heat. When they were cool used acrylic paints to decorate them.

Coding with Minecraft in Room 1

The Hour of Code is a global event which takes place each year, when millions of people across the world from ages 4 upwards get the chance to learn about computer science and coding in particular. Continue reading

It’s beginning to look a lot like…..

….CHRISTMAS!

Johnny our caretaker has been very busy putting up the Christmas trees, lights and crib in the school. Lots of classes have Christmas themed displays and art work. On Friday we had our first Advent assembly. The theme was Hope and a pupil called Hope, who is in Second class  lit the first purple candle on our Advent wreath. 3rd class read out some of their hopes for this Christmas season.

Hour of Code in Junior Infants and 5th and 6th.

We had great fun today learning about coding. Coding is telling the computer what to do and it is how computer games and apps are created.

Junior Infants love computers and wanted to learn about coding. Pupils from 5th and 6th class offered  to come and help us. We played a game called Candy Quest.

We got to choose our characters and we had to tell the computer what to do to so our character could move through the different levels. We learned a lot about computers and really enjoyed it.
