Abbvie STEM prize winners

A huge congratulation to 6th class students who took part in the Abbvie STEM prize for 2025 last school term. The aim of the competition was to inspire primary school pupils to think about challenges in their localities and to use skills learned in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math’s to come up with solutions that will make a positive impact. Our School took part in a beach clean up with Flossie and the Beach Cleaners who are a Dublin based environmental group who offer workshops and beach clean up days across the country. The children analyzed the rubbish they had found into categories, made pie charts and used their creative Science minds to design new equipment for younger people who take part in the beach clean ups. We were delighted to heat that we had won the prize of new Science equipment for the school, a fun interactive Science workshop in the school for kids and a funded trip to an SEAI research center as well as a visit to our local Abbvie plant nearby.



Greenwave Project

We are continuing to develop our outdoor areas with our  Greenwave Project.

The Willow Huts that we planted in November in  our Maze are no longer bare  and are covered with fantastic leaves providing us with great shelter for us to play in and take a break from the sun.

We also got a brand new bench and one of our benches painted adding a spot of colour to our playground.

Lots of places to have fun in the sun.

Craft Class for Parents

What a wonderful morning we had in The Parents Room with our wonderful Craft Class Group.
Sylvia (A parent of a Senior Infant pupil) kindly shared her talents and skills with us all as we learned some new skills.
We have started making some cotton line pieces and had such a great morning.
Class continues next Thursday at 9am in The Parents Room.
Well done ladies – you are all superstars ⭐️⭐️ & a big ‘Thank You’ to our wonderful tutor, Sylvia.

Storytime – Senior Infants

Our Senior Infants and Ms. Walsh are very excited about their Storytime Programme which starts today, Monday for 20 weeks.

Each child will take home a new book , every Monday and Thursday, to share and enjoy at home with a Parent/Guardian. By the end of the 20 weeks, each child will have brought 40 books home and shared ‘StoryTime’ with their family.

On Friday morning last, Senior Infant Parents were invited to The Parents’ Room to chat to Ms. Browne, to find out more about the Programme and to have a cuppa. We chatted about the importance of spending a few minutes every evening with our children, looking at a book – talking about the pictures, the characters, imagining a different endiong to the story etc.

We were then treated to a fabulous story by Ms.Grimes, who read to the Senior Infant Class in The Library.

We all loved the book ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ – thank you Ms. Grimes.

Remember to put away the phones and devices, find a quiet spot in your house and enjoy the book with your child.

Thursday is World Book Day and our Book Fair starts on Wednesday – the excitement is huge!! We love books and love to read – the greatest gift we can give our children is the gift of reading!

January in the Ark

Along with integration and baking we got up to lots of fun activities such as nature walks to the IT to visit the tree trail, history walks to the famine graveyard and lots of fun in the snow and ice! Take a look!

Baking in the Ark

We really love baking and cooking in the Ark and try to get into the kitchen once a week. We learn so many different life skills from our time in the kitchen such as following cooking instructions, weighing, measuring and the all important cleaning up skills! We also have some delicious treats at the end. Some of the recipes we covered this term so far have been Gingerbread Men, Pizza, French Toast and Cookies. Take a look!

December in the Ark

Wow wee, what a month! Below are some pictures of all the activities we managed to squeeze in this month. We visited the Hawkswell for a concert, wrapped up warm in the frost and ice, made Gingerbread men, went to Advent assemblies (and read a prayer in front for the school), practiced for the Christmas Concert, decorated the room for Christmas and had a visit from the Man in Red himself. Now its time for rest after all that! Happy Christmas and New Year from everyone in the Ark!

The Ark-November

We were so busy in the Ark in November that I forgot to add my blog post! We were super busy during Science week. We worked with Beebots (see previous Beebots post) and also made our own Lava lamps in class using water, food coloring, oil and an Alka Seltzer tablet. It was fun to watch the oil and bubbles turn into a Lava Lamp like the one I have on my table.

Our theme this month was Owls and we learned lots of interesting Owl facts and read the story Owl Babies. We made some lovely Art and finished off the theme with some procedural writing and making Owl Toast. Once we finished up in the kitchen, we tidied up and made sure the kitchen was ready for the next class to use.

The children in the Ark were also busy intergrating back into their mainstream class this month and they also managed to get some down time on the swings and outside in the sun for a spot of tennis!

All in all, a very busy and fun month!

Visit from Sligo Library

On Thursday we had a lovely visit from Staff of Sligo County Library. The pupils were told all about how easy it is for everyone to join the Library and reminded us all that it is FREE to join. We heard about all of the fabulous books that are available to ‘borrow’ and the Staff also told us that we can go into the Library anytime and just sit and read quietly.

There are always lovely activities taking place in Sligo County Library and we always share these on our St Edward’s NS Facebook Page. Why not take a trip to the Library with the kids and see for yourself all that the Library offers, to read and to enjoy.

Sligo County Library are always very kind  to our boys and girls and are always so supportive of everything we do in our school and indeed in all schools in County Sligo. We are grateful for  the time you dedicate to sharing a love of  books and the love of Reading with us all.

December in The Parents Room

We have had a very busy few weeks in the Parents Room with 2 two very successful workshops.

Make Up Session:
Early in December, the wonderful Caroline Wimsey ran a Make Up Workshop for Parents. It was a lovely morning with Caroline sharing her make up skills and talents with us.

Flower Arranging:
On Friday 16th, Martina Kilian joined us to help us to create floral center pieces for Christmas. We used materials that can be easily found in our homes- ribbons, old decorations and recyclable containers. The 6th Class pupils helped Ms Browne to gather greenery from around the school grounds.

It was a great morning and these Parents are so creative yet didn’t think so at the start of the workshop. Their pieces are beautiful!

Lots of creativity, chocolate, coffee and Christmas music- a morning to remember!
