Parent Council Meeting

Our fantastic Parent Council met for the second time today in school. This group of enthusiastic Parents are helping to plan our Family Fun Day at the moment and the plans are coming along very nicely with lots of exciting activities in store.

Our Parent Council Chairperson for 2023-2024  is Niamh Scanlon, Secretary is Reyna Benas and Treasurer is Yullia Uskova. The other members of the Committee are Dympna Gallagher, Jimmy Sweeney, Susan Ward and Fiona Hanratty.

Every Parent in the school is part of the Parent Council working alongside the Committee to help with school activities and to get involved in St. Edward’s NS.

The next Parent Council meeting is Tuesday June 6th at 1:30pm in The Parents Room. We encourage as many parents as possible to come along and to get involved. It’s really a lot of fun and a great way to get to know others. Lots of tea/coffee and treats too from Ms. Browne !!!

Hope to see more of you there. You’ll be delighted you got involved.

Parents Cookery Course with Eileen’s Kitchen Table

Our 6 week Cookery Course with Eileen Kirrane, finished this week. What a wonderful 6 weeks we all had.

This great bunch of Parents baked and cooked so many beautiful and tasty dishes over the 6 weeks.

They made scones, madeira cake, Ukrainian Cheesecake, pancakes and lots more savoury dishes.

Eileen showed us all how to make or own breadcrumbs, chicken goujons, baked vegetables and how to add simple flavour to dishes for all the family to enjoy.

Well done to all of the Parents who attended the Course and a big ‘Thank You’ to Eileen Kirrane who is a wonderful Tutor, Chef but above all a great lady who put a smile on all our faces every Wednesday morning.

Eileen will be back with us in October for more ‘Quick and Easy Meals for all of the Family’

Parents Craft Course

What a wonderful 4 weeks we had in The Parent’s Room with Sylwia leading the Craft Course – sharing her time and talent with us all. Thank you So much.

Craft Class for Parents

What a wonderful morning we had in The Parents Room with our wonderful Craft Class Group.
Sylvia (A parent of a Senior Infant pupil) kindly shared her talents and skills with us all as we learned some new skills.
We have started making some cotton line pieces and had such a great morning.
Class continues next Thursday at 9am in The Parents Room.
Well done ladies – you are all superstars ⭐️⭐️ & a big ‘Thank You’ to our wonderful tutor, Sylvia.

Storytime – Senior Infants

Our Senior Infants and Ms. Walsh are very excited about their Storytime Programme which starts today, Monday for 20 weeks.

Each child will take home a new book , every Monday and Thursday, to share and enjoy at home with a Parent/Guardian. By the end of the 20 weeks, each child will have brought 40 books home and shared ‘StoryTime’ with their family.

On Friday morning last, Senior Infant Parents were invited to The Parents’ Room to chat to Ms. Browne, to find out more about the Programme and to have a cuppa. We chatted about the importance of spending a few minutes every evening with our children, looking at a book – talking about the pictures, the characters, imagining a different endiong to the story etc.

We were then treated to a fabulous story by Ms.Grimes, who read to the Senior Infant Class in The Library.

We all loved the book ‘A Squash and a Squeeze’ – thank you Ms. Grimes.

Remember to put away the phones and devices, find a quiet spot in your house and enjoy the book with your child.

Thursday is World Book Day and our Book Fair starts on Wednesday – the excitement is huge!! We love books and love to read – the greatest gift we can give our children is the gift of reading!

Grandparent’s Day – Wednesday 25th January

We all know how wonderful Grandparents are and just how important they are in the lives of our children.

We are celebrating Grandparents Day in St. Edward’s NS on Wednesday 25th January as part of Catholic Schools Week.

All Grandparents are invited to come to the school at 11am on Wednesday where they will get a chance to visit their grandchildren in their classrooms.

We will have a whole school Assembly and a cuppa for all the Grandparents.

Looking forward to seeing as many there as possible.

Christmas Holidays

Today we enjoyed a fun Assembly in our Christmas jumpers with our raffle for those in attendance. 2 children from each class won selection boxes and got their photo taken. So much excitement.

In January we will be working hard to be on time for school and to be in school every day (unless we are sick) Watch this space for more news about our Attendance promotion in January.

We finished off our Assembly with a sing song and a good old Christmas bop !! Everyone looked super cool and festive in their Christmas jumpers.

Thanks to the generosity of everyone, we raised €200 for Sligo Social Services. Thanks to them for the good work they do helping families in need especially at Christmas time.

Wishing you all a happy & peaceful Christmas. Take care of each other and have fun. We look forward to seeing you all again on Thursday 5th December when school opens at 8:50AM.

Advent Assembly Monday 19th December

On Monday morning we enjoyed another Advent Assembly and Evan lit the next candle on our Advent wreath.
Advent is a time for preparing – for taking time out to be still and to think about all of the happy moments in our lives.
Indeed we have so much to be happy about in St Edward’s. We have all worked so hard this term and had lots of fun with our Teachers and our friends. We have been busy in our classrooms and all around the school.

At this mornings assembly we celebrated some wonderful achievements ;

 

 

 

*Reading Certs were awarded to pupils in 3rd, 4th, 5th & 6th classes. There is some fantastic reading taking place in each classroom and the boys and girls were justly rewarded for their hard work. Fingers crossed Santa brings some books to everyone. The gift of reading is the greatest gift we can give to children and reading takes us to places we never imagined we could travel to. It allows us to get to know people that we would never meet in our daily lives and helps us all to ‘escape’ to magical places filled with fun and excitement.

*Patrick G. & Patrick O. celebrated their recent successes with assembly. Patrick G. showed us his gold boxing medal that he won at the weekend in Westport.  Patrick O. beautiful Snowman painting was chosen as our Christmas Card picture and really is a lovely piece of art. Well done to both boys. We are very proud of you. Keep it up!

Visit from Sligo Library

On Thursday we had a lovely visit from Staff of Sligo County Library. The pupils were told all about how easy it is for everyone to join the Library and reminded us all that it is FREE to join. We heard about all of the fabulous books that are available to ‘borrow’ and the Staff also told us that we can go into the Library anytime and just sit and read quietly.

There are always lovely activities taking place in Sligo County Library and we always share these on our St Edward’s NS Facebook Page. Why not take a trip to the Library with the kids and see for yourself all that the Library offers, to read and to enjoy.

Sligo County Library are always very kind  to our boys and girls and are always so supportive of everything we do in our school and indeed in all schools in County Sligo. We are grateful for  the time you dedicate to sharing a love of  books and the love of Reading with us all.

Roots of Empathy (HSCL, SCP & 2nd Class)

Aishling Kilkenny (SCP) Evert & Elsa (Roots of Empathy Teacher)

The Roots of Empathy Programme is currently running in 2nd class , with our wonderful Mom Evert & of course our Roots of Empathy Teacher,  Baby Elsa.

Aishling from School Completion Programme, is delivering the Programme and works with 2nd Class & Ms Middleton each week. The Programme is a 27 week programme and aims to reduce levels of aggression among school children by raising social-emotional competence and increasing empathy.

At the heart of the programme is a baby  (Elsa) and parent (Evert) who visit the classroom every three weeks during the school year. A trained Roots of Empathy instructor (Aishling) coaches the children to observe the baby’s development and to label the baby’s feelings. The baby is the ‘teacher’ in this experiential learning, while the instructor helps the children identify and reflect on their own feelings.

Well done to everyone involved and especially to Baby Elsa who is just a ‘superstar’!!
