Christmas Assembly 2015

We celebrated the last day of term with an assembly in the hall. We sang some Christmas Carols and lit the last purple candle on our Advent wreath. Mrs McGowan called out the names of all the children who had excellent attendance and they all received a selection box!

We raised over €1,100 euro for some very worthwhile charities over the last month. We presented a cheque to Nicole and Taylormay for Friends of The Coombe. Their little sister has spent a lot of time in The Coombe Hospital in Dublin but the good news is that she has now been moved to Sligo and is much closer to home for Christmas! Our Carol Singers had great fun carol singing in Johnston Court Shopping Centre and the money they collected was presented to Sligo Social Services to help those most in need this Christmas. We also presented a cheque to our past pupil Emma Robinson, the Sligo Rose of Tralee, who will be swimming on Christmas Morning in Rosses Point to raise funds for her trip to Chernobyl to help the sick children there. We collected this money on our non-uniform days this week.

Tonima and Kamil received prizes because their art work was chosen for our 2015 St. Edward’s Christmas Card.  Ross and Darwin in 3rd and 4th classes received a special prize from their teachers for their vocabulary work over the last few months. Well done everybody and have a happy and safe holiday!

Infant Christmas Sing-along

Our Junior and Senior Infants invited their parents into school to share a little Sing-along before Christmas. Junior Infants recited a short poem and Senior Infants used percussion instruments. We can’t wait for Christmas!

Guess Who Came to Visit?

Hour of Code

Students in our school, from 2nd to 6th class took part in an Hour of Code recently. This is an international event during which children (and adults!) spend an hour taking part in activities which introduce the basics of computer coding. Code is the language that computer scientists write to make machines work. Students created programmes using themes such as Star Trek, Minecraft and even Frozen!

2nd class really enjoyed using the Star Wars lesson activity and you can too by following this link:

Star Wars Hour of Code

2nd class also enjoyed taking part in the Hour of Code. Here are some of the things they said about it:

“Coding is really cool and good fun” Rachel

“The coding is really like maths. If you count the spaces you need to move BB8 and R2D2 it’s really easy” Matthew

“The sound effects are really cool. I like being in control of the droids” Teyanna

“Once you know left, right, up, down, the games are easy” Joshua

“When you got to level 15 in Star Wars it was more fun. You didn’t have to follow any rules, you made your own” Kelsey

“The instructions were really clear in all levels” Chelsea

Small Coins for Small Babies

Over the last few weeks, the children in St.Edwards N.S. have been gathering all the small change that they could find . Each morning it was collected in a large white bucket. We would like to thank Collette from the Credit Union for helping us to count it. Over four hundred euro was raised .Thanks to everyone who supported.

The money is for a very good cause. Lauren and Taylormay Shannon’s little baby sister spent some time in The Coombe Hospital in  Dublin.Thankfully she is on the mend now and will spend Christmas with her family in Sligo.

We would like to donate the money to the Friends of the Coombe , a charity for sick babies to say thank to all the people who looked after her and to help other families in the future.

We will be making a presentation at an assembly after Christmas.

Tidy School Winner 2015

As we near the end of 2015 we look back on a very special award we won this year.
First Prize for Tidiest school in Sligo in 2015.
This is the second consecutive year St. Edward’s N.S. has won this award so we are very proud to have achieved this twice. This was a whole school effort which was co-ordinated by the Green School Committee and every class did their part.
Some of the things we were commended for:
– The planting and displays in our courtyards.
– Work on the mural at the front of the school done by 4th class.
– Work done by Green Fingers Club – window boxes etc.
– Our efforts to recycle, compost and limit our landfill waste.
– Efforts by litter pickers in 3rd.
– Postcards and display notice boards on how long it takes waste to decompose done by 4th for Something Fishy Project.
– Whole school clean-up done in term 3 in 2015.
– Excellent work done by Johnny the caretaker mowing lawns and maintaining the grounds.
The school was presented with the award at a special presentation in the Sligo Park Hotel.
This was followed by a visit from Ann Gorby from the Tidy Town Committee who presented the children with a plaque and Certificates.
The plaque is now on display in our front hall along with last year’s plaque. We also
received 200 euro which will be used to further improve our school grounds as we enter the competition for 2016.
