End of Year Assembly

On Friday we marked the end of the school year with an assembly, when we celebrated lots of good news from around the school. We have succeeded in achieving our 11th Science and Maths Award thanks to a collaborative effort from all classes. Junior Infants, 1st Class and 4th Class collaborated on a successful bid to achieve our second Creative Schools Award and 4th class also announced that their “Something Fishy” Project has just qualified for the National Finals, having come through the regional selection process. We said goodbye to staff members Ben, Ann and Maggie who have been with us for the last year . They have made a special contribution to our school and will not be forgotten. We also said goodbye to Mr Maye who has been teaching in St.Edward’s for more than 10 years. The children from 6th class presented him with some mementos and sang their graduation song for him. We wish him the very best in his new job.

We wish all our students, parents and staff a happy and restful holiday and look forward to seeing you all back safe and well in September!

Creative Schools Award 2014/15

We are so pleased that St. Edward’s N.S. has achieved The Creative School’s Award for the second year in a row. The children love being involved in creative learning and we are so pleased that there is now a platform where we can share our creativity and have it recognised. We would like to thank all the children and teachers who contributed to our project this year and we are really looking forward to getting involved in the project again in 2015/16.

Ice-Cream Party in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland

We had a fantastic ice-cream party in aid of Down Syndrome Ireland for which we raised €70. Thanks you so much to all the children in Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class who kindly donated to the cause.

6th class donation to the North West Hospice

6th class donated a small amount of their confirmation money to the north west hospice.A lady named Cathryn came in to collect a cheque of €130.  She also told us some information.

There are only eight beds in the inpatient unit and the catchment area has a population of 110,000 people.

In 2014 ,they had a total of 84 volunteers.

More than 50% of the patients leave the hospice healthy again.

We know many patients will benefit from our donation.

Movie Makers After School Club

The Movie Makers club have finished up for the summer and had a great time finding, scripting and rehearsing their favourite jokes. They used an app on the iPads called Sock Puppets to record animations of themselves and edited their final products using the iMovie app. They are very proud of their work. Prepare yourself for some laughs!

Something Fishy and Tidy Towns projects.

The children of 4th class in St. Edward’s NS have taken part in the ‘Something Fishy’ project this year. As part of the project, which also tied in with Sligo Tidy Towns, we made a beautiful mural which you can see on the front wall of the school. We learned about fish life, water quality and the importance of keeping our rivers pollution free. You can see parts 1 and 2 of the video of our project below:

Maths Fun In The Sun

Summer has arrived and Junior Infants are taking full advantage of the good weather. This week we took our maths lessons outside and explored our maths topic ‘capacity’ with lots of water basins and different types of containers. We had a lot of fun and learned lots of new maths vocabulary as well.  Hopefully the good weather will hold out and we will have lots more opportunities to take our learning outside. 🙂
