Room 9 Easter Activities

We were very busy in room 9 with our end of term Easter activities. We made Easter nests and had an egg hunt using the hot and cold game to find the eggs. We also made our own chocolate easter eggs, they were yummy.

Lifecycle of the Butterfly

In junior and senior infants we talked about the lifecycle of the butterfly. We watched videos and observed pictures of the different stages in the lifecycle of the butterfly. We even had a live butterfly garden in our classroom where we could see the caterpillars grow into cocoons and eventually into beautiful ‘Painted Lady Butterflies’. We would like to say thank you to Ms. Bruen for getting the caterpillars for our classes.

Senior infants also made a craft piece based on the lifecycle of the butterfly using pasta shapes and card. Have a look at all our photos below.

 

 

Easter bunnies in Room 10

Foe Easter the children in 5th class made some bunnies .We used old socks filled with beans and lentils.We then decorated them with eyes ,teeth ,nose and of course a tail .

3rd and 4th Class Reports

This term third and fourth class have been learning how to write reports.

Third class have written reports about endangered animals such as the Jaguar and the  African Wild Dog and fourth class have written reports about garden birds such as the Goldcrest and the Robin.

Here is an example of a report written by a fourth class student.

The Robin

The Robin is a local garden bird and it lives in Ireland and UK.

Appearance

The Robin has a bright orange-red breast, a white belly with olive brown upper parts. It is about 13-14 cm, its wing span is 20-22cm and its weight is 16-22 g. The juvenile Robin has speckled buff brown upper parts. They have no red feathers so that adult birds do not attack them in territorial disputes. The speckled feathers are lost in a partial moult when the bird is about two or three months old.

Habitat

The Robin lives in a concealed place for example, high up in the trees where nobody will see its nest. The Robin is very protective of its nest and will not let any other robin take over the nest.

Diet

The Robin normally eats worms and small insects.

The Experiment:  To examine the transport system in the flower.

Materials you will need:

  1. Red food colouring
  2. Some jars of water
  3. Daffodils or chrysanthemums and sticks of celery

Method:

  1. Fill the jam jars 3/4 full of water.
  2. Add two dessert spoons of food colouring to the water.
  3. Place some flowers or celery into the coloured water.
  4. Put some flowers or celery into water to see the difference.
  5. Record and observe the results over five days.

We can see from the experiment that the water has been absorbed by the plants as the colour has gone all the way through to the petals.

6th CLass Nature Talk

6th class were involved in a nature talk and walk around the school looking at flora and fauna that can be seen in and around the school and Sligo area

3rd Class Discovery

On Monday, during lunch break, some of the third class children were doing litter picking on the school grounds.

They were amazed to discover a little nest containing 4 little eggs, tucked away in a corner.

Making Grassheads in Senior Infants

In senior infants we have started talking about the signs of Spring. One thing we learned was that seeds start to grow, so we decided to plant our own grass seeds to see if they would grow. We left them on the windowsill for sunlight and every day we watered them.  We used old pairs of tights, filled them with compost and grass seeds and then decorated them. Here are some of our really cool grass heads!

 

Spring Walk

This week Junior Infants went on a Spring walk around the school. We found lots of early signs of Spring. Have a look at our photos. We will be going on another walk next week to see if we can find even more signs of spring so keep an eye on our blog to see more photos.
