Month: June 2012

5th & 6th Class Visit The National University in Galway.

On Wednesday 20th June, pupils from 5th & 6th class went to the National University of Ireland in Galway. We went to have a tour of the University and to see what students learn and do in college. It was a very good opportunity to see what college will be like for us in the future. We were very excited about going on our tour all the way to Galway.

When we arrived in Galway we were taken on a tour of the campus. We went to the ZoologyMuseum where there were lots of different animals. We saw snakes, a crocodile, a fox a monkey and a blowfish. There were lots of interesting facts to learn. We were all very hungry after our journey and we had chicken and chips in the canteen.

After that we went to the Science Laboratory. We were divided into different groups and we did lots of different experiments. In one of the experiments we put a branch of leaves into ice. It froze. Then we hit the leaves against the table they all smashed into tiny pieces.

Finally, we went to the Kingfisher Sports Hall. This is a very big gym with three huge indoor courts. Here we played soccer, basketball, hockey and table tennis. It was brilliant fun.

We arrived home at 5.30. It was a brilliant day. We did lots of different activities and it was a good taster of what life in college might be.

Jumping for joy!

Sports Day

Sports Day this year was on Tuesday 19th June. Everybody in the school went over to Sligo IT to take part in the fun and games.

In the morning, all of us were divided into groups. Each group was given a name of a country. There were two captains in each group. Our team could get points by following instructions, taking part in all activities and walking in a line from one activity to the next.

We had lots of different activities. There was basketball, soccer, rounders, races, bouncy castle, the long jump and the shot putt. My favourite was the bouncy castle it was brilliant fun.

At lunch time we all had a burger and a drink. Then we had our school soccer finals. Ireland and Germany were in the final. It was a very close match. Germany won in the end. Some of our parents also came to our Sports Day for a BBQ and to watch us play. It was a great day.

Well done to all for improving attendance!

Yeats Day Art Competition Winner

Sligo town is preparing to celebrate the first ever ‘Yeats Day’ next Wednesday, the 13th of June. This date was chosen as it is the birthday of our world famous local poet, William Butler Yeats.
In association with this special event, Sligo Education Centre organised an art competition for all schools in Sligo. The entrants had to create a picture based on one of Yeats’ poems. They had to choose from either “The Fiddler of Dooney’, ‘The Stolen Child’ or ‘Lake Isle of Inisfree’
The overall winner in the 3rd Class category was our very own Christopher Lobo.
Congratulations to Christopher and to all who entered the competition.
